So the colonies are picking a new govenor general or whatever they call them to replace the kenyan fellow they had last time.

The choice this year is between a ginger tax dodging democrat oaf and a reptoid dynastic politician up to her neck in lies and corruption. As ever the contest between red and blue has been riveting, with much grabbing of pussies and hiding of emails.

We have a thread charting the campaigns but the big day deserves its own thread.

things will probably come to a heat oop north in the next 10 years, but I expect we'll see a nativist resurgance in Canada due to immigration. Minnesota is basically Canada-lite and they're already having issues due to how many Somalis we let in, importing a fuckton of Syrians to Toronto will fuck over white Canadians just as much.

Most like the Repubs turn into a quasi-libertarian worker's party while the Dems try as much as possible to swap to New Deal Democrat Bernie supporters and drop a lot of their stupid foreign-war policies.

The "IM MOVING TO CANADA RIGHT NOW" people are funny in so many different ways.

It's shortsighted -- even if Trump wins reelection he can only serve a maximum of eight years as president. And nobody knows what kind of president he'll be. Uprooting your life just to make a weak protest against THE MAN is just dumb. Especially when the person it's targeted at hasn't actually done anything as the president yet.

Then there's the sheer childishness of it, often from people who claim they're super mature compared to icky Trump supporters. "If I don't get exactly what I want I'm just leaving!" And then nothing much happens to Trump. He just has one less opponent, who chose to flounce off like a kindergartener.

I guess maybe I see a value in the community where I live that these people don't, for whatever reason. I don't always agree with my neighbors, but if I have the right to vote for who I want, they do too.

And Trump definitely appeals to all kinds of people who feel that the system is letting them down in certain ways. If you credit him with nothing else, you have to admit he found a way to tap into a constituency that felt ignored and abused by other politicians. And he did it on a scale unmatched since 1896 (the last time we had a populist running for president). That's pretty impressive.

I think you're overestimating how much people thought through this election. It wasn't a symptom of not taking the election seriously so much as near-universal belief that the system was so fucked we couldn't fix it anyways.

I walked into my office in the middle of the Silicon Valley this morning to hear 2 things:

1. This election is fucked no matter who wins and corporations control the government anyways
2. Yes, we Americans recognize the system is fucked but have no real power to change things. (said to h1-b workers who don't understand our electoral system because literally no one outside the USA thinks it works well)

I've been harping on it all election but we are seriously pre-1860 levels of angry as fuck over our government's actions. If no reform happens we will overthrow the existing government. That's why I hope Trump succeeds, if only to boil off a bit of the tension both sides have with our elected body.

I've always wondered how the definition of a corporate fatcat could ever be called populist, but if you say you want to help out the working man, I guess you are, no matter how much you end up following on it.

I wouldn't say that's accurate. There have been many claimants to that titling since then.

"Populist" is an excellent fit for that definition; it was the time constraint that made it incorrect to my eye.

That's literally what a populist is, both parties have just been demonizing the word for long enough that you have an instinctive negative association with the word.

Not plausible. She'll be very old, to the point that no one will expect her to finish her term, and political parties tend to shy away from losers.
