Obvious question, but have you searched specifically for "Bible highlighters?" It's a whole category of highlighters designed just for that purpose (and for other thin-paged books, like Complete Works of Shakespeare, but the money's in the Bible).

I had some gel highlighters once that were nice. They went on a little like a crayon, except see-through. I was worried they'd transfer when the pages closed, but they didn't. I checked my drawer and I don't have left to check what the brand was, sorry.

You can sneakily smell them at the store, too. Most of the scents are available in multiple cleaning formulae through the line, and they all have a hand soap version, so you just unscrew the hand soap neck and give it a sniff. (The general cleaner has a seal.)

Notable exception: their rhubarb only comes in hand soap, despite being a great version of a rarely-sold scent, so I don't get to wash rhubarb dishes.

Big fan of their geranium. The only Mrs. Meyer's things I've been disappointed by were the non-peppermint mint (sickly sweet) and their powdered sink cleaner, which stinks pretty but for cleaning might as well just be powdered chalk.
 
With Meyer's, be careful of their refill bottles; they leak.

Novelty valve stem covers (for bikes or cars) are a thing I didn't realize I needed in my life. They're all over Etsy.

I've began journaling and have strived making my journal as cute as fucking possible. The Japanese have really made innovations in good stationary. Do you like washi tape, but don't like the roll form factor because it's cumbersome? Introducing Kitta washi tape.

Single serve washi tape strips. It's really great when you can have 16 types of tape that can be slid into my journaling pouch.

I use a hobonichi planner and it's well worth the money. The paper is amazing to write on, but I'm typically don't write a lot. I usually paste photos and decorate with stickers. I use my inkjet printer but if I'm feeling it I use the portable dye sub printer Canon Selphy 1500. It's great for when I go on trips.

I also recommend sticker flakes for larger high quality decorations. I like the BGM brand.

Also check if you have a Daiso near you for cheap stationary as well.

I've finally found a few disappointments in the HiSmile novelty-serious toothpaste line.

Before that: I like that their naming convention lets you know what to expect. "Banana" = "we figured out a realistic banana." "Grape Bubblegum, Blue Raspberry, Orange Soda" = "this is a good version of the artificial fruit flavor you would expect." Although the orange soda is notable for tasting specifically like an orange soda, not any of the other version of artificial orange.

Disappointments: Hazelnut tastes kind of thin, like coffee flavor syrup hazelnut. Not bad, but not the richness and depth that I was expecting from things like their chocolate.

Butter flavor tastes like Jelly Belly Buttered Popcorn jelly beans, except without that popcorn note. The problem here is the sweetness. Sweet butter with cinnamon might work, but butter that's just sweet is weird.

Unsurprisingly, Popcorn flavor is also not great. Still sweet, very vaguely popcorn, but by not having the butter note to lead it, it the taste is very subdued. This probably would have worked better as a kettle corn/caramel corn flavor.

Yes, of course I tried mixing them. Yes, it tasted just like Jelly Belly Buttered Popcorn jelly beans. I don't think either of these flavors are available in big tubes, for the obvious reason.

Another vague suggestion: if you have a university nearby, you might check their student bookstore. They tend to have a disproportionately large selection of highlighters, and if they're open stock you can test them in person and save a lot of time and money.
 
I generally get the bulk of my stationery from Aliexpress... quality is variable, but it's cheap in bulk. If I'm after specific designs and themes I hit up the self published artists on Etsy.

My biggest problem with Etsy is that so many US artists do shit like charge $35 AUD for postage for a single sticker. I get that it's a marginal business and international postage is a bitch, but damn.
 
Hismile mustard toothpaste: Disappointing, because I really like basic bright-yellow mustard. This got the vinegar and mustard seed flavor in there, but it ended up tasting botanical instead, like a pickle brine without dill in it. An inoffensive flavor, and if they reformulated they could probably do a great dill pickle flavor, but it wasn't French's. Also oddly didn't taste sweet, despite the xylitol.

Hismile ketchup toothpaste: Similarly, does not taste like ketchup. However, tastes exactly like if you brushed your teeth with tomato paste from the little can. Too tomato-y to be ketchup; if they relabeled this "Tomato Paste Toothpaste," it would be a perfect flavor replica. (Also it's a good taste, I should clarify.)

In both cases, the artificial flavor was unable to capture the very artificiality of what it was copying, but I'm neither applied flavor chemistry nor Lit Crit enough to write an essay about what that means.
 
Butterfly knife comb or trainer.

The teeth on regular combs tend to snap off when I leave it in my back pocket, so this was a nice solution. Also doubles as a fidget device if I wanna be retarded and pretend I'm a greaser nigger.
 
Hismile toothpaste flavor bonanza continues:

Cinnamon Donut: OK, more of a "cinnamon baked goods" flavor. Gentle cinnamon. Would never guess the doughnut part.

Pink Donut: rename this "I Licked the Icing off a Donut, but from a Good Bakery." Pretty good. Also no "fried dough" note to the flavor.

(I am mentioning the "dough" aspect because of the Quest protein bar "Chocolate Doughnut" flavor, which manages to perfectly capture not the taste, but the greasiness in your mouth and self-hatred in your soul after eating several doughnuts.)
 
Necro- and double-post to mention a cheap purchase that continues to make my dumb life infinitesimally better: a graduated shotglass.

I don't think it's intended for mixing drinks; it's just a common form made into a measuring tool.

It's a lot easier to measure liquid ingredients for a recipe without spilling, and easy to clean.

However, where it really shines is when you're taking liquid medication. The plastic cups that ship with liquid cold meds are flimsy in the hand, hard to read, hard to wash, often don't sit straight on a flat surface, and this is all in a time where you already feel like crap.

Pour up your 15 mL of cold meds in a glass measuring shotglass, drink it, water chaser and then rinse the shotglass out in the sink after. It's a good thing.

I use a laboratory beaker (bought new from a lab supplies company and never used in an actual laboratory). I seriously considered a measuring cylinder, but ended up concluding that this was too autistic, even for me.

I take pics of them outside, I haven't done any custom ones but have ideas, and yes they are excellent gifts

I bought the Bright Sand and it's incredible. It bleeds through even less than Mildliners. Even the fine tip doesn't bleed!

For the washi tape enthusiasts, I highly recommend investing in a washi tape cutter:

bought hismile mango sorbet and banana because of this thread. I'd been debating it for a while but didn't because I've not had good experiences with novelty toothpaste flavors in the past. pleasantly surprised by both though I think banana is my favorite. To me it tastes like a banana laffy taffy in a good way. might start being a 3x a day brusher.
also a big fan of japanese stationery and I own more pencil cases than I'd care to admit. My one gripe is the glossy paper most japanese notebooks tend to have- gel ink seems to slide right off.

They look great! I'll have to see, if I can get them where I am. Nice that they are not too thick. Perfect for highlighting in a book! Thanks for the recommendation.
