Is Dating a Total Nightmare for You Right Now?

On a recent Saturday night in Austin, Anya Haas went out hoping to meet someone. She planned to grab a bar seat at a trendy restaurant and scope out her options, but when she arrived, it was packed. While waiting, an elderly man offered to buy Haas dinner; she politely declined and left to grab some sushi before heading to a comedy show. There, she figured, it would be easier to mingle with people her own age. But when the 32-year-old hospitality worker arrived at the club, it was mostly empty. She was also the only person who sat in the front row, and the comics singled her out for being alone. Humiliated, Haas then got a ride home from a single, 75-year-old woman who said she drove for Uber in order to meet people. That’s going to be me, Haas thought while petting the driver’s dog.

Once she got home, Haas recorded a videorecapping her mortifying experience. “I’m not someone who posts or cries on the Internet,” she says. “So this is a new one for me.” Haas, who has been single for the past seven years, talks through tears about how tired she is of people telling her a dream man will “come along when you least expect it.” “I’m so sick of hearing that,” she says, slamming her hands down on her kitchen island. “There’s such a thing as people who just don’t find their person and don’t get married.”

Haas had posted on TikTok only three times before, but by the next day, her video had millions of views across the internet. People began to repost her TikTok alongside other videos of tearful 20- and 30-something single women, and the reactions showed just how disconnected the sexes are when it comes to the state of dating in 2024. Many men criticized Haas for having “unrealistic expectations” or seemed confused by her dilemma. “Why are so many 29 yr old boss girls from Tiktok having public meltdowns about failing to find a man?” wrote one dude on X. Meanwhile, legions of women commiserated. “I’m in the same boat,” one 30-year-old wrote, adding that she also hadn’t been in a relationship in almost seven years.

Single people have always griped about trying to meet someone, but lately, it seems heterosexual women have reached a breaking point. Not only are they crying on-camera and swearing off dating apps, they are becomingvoluntarily celibate like Julia Fox or going “boysober.” When Bumble ran an anti-celibacy campaign last month, the company received so much backlash it was forced to pull the ads and apologize. Taken together, it looks as though single women in the U.S. are one more bad date away from launching their own version of South Korea’s 4B movement, in which women refuse to date, fuck, marry, or have kids with men.

Ryan Spencer vented her frustrations on TikTok in mid-May because conversations with a new love interest were stuck at surface level. None of the five men she had previously dated provided the 29-year-old with the deep commitment she’s seeking either. “How much longer do I have to pray and manifest and wait?” she says in her video. Choking back tears, she wonders, “Is it just supposed to be me, alone?” Spencer tells me she grew up with parents who still “absolutely love the shit out of each other,” and along with marriage, kids, and a house, she wants the fairy-tale romance, too. “I’m not denying that I’m a little bit delulu when it comes to falling in love,” she says. “I’m sorry, I grew up watching Disney movies!”

Taylor, who asked to go by her first name only, could relate to Spencer’s video even though she’s not angling for a marriage proposal. “She has a solid life but doesn’t have a person to share it with,” the 30-year-old pastry cook says of the TikTok. “It hit me recently: 90 percent of the things I do on a daily basis I do alone.” Taylor, who lives in Brooklyn and wants a partnership of some kind, says so many of the guys she meets suffer from what she calls “porn brain”: They prize performative masculinity over actual connection. During sex, she says, they focus on dominance rather than her pleasure. Her only relationship ended a year and a half ago, and while she has been on a few dates since then, it’s been hard to have meaningful conversations.

All the women I spoke with said they feel apps have turned dates into transactions. Haas swore off Bumble and Hinge more than a year ago, finding that most guys just pretended to want something serious in order to get laid. (Since posting her video, she says two men she previously matched with sent unprompted dick pics.) Anissa, a 31-year-old corporate lawyer who asked to go by a pseudonym, tells me the guys she meets seem interested in “conquest” while she and other single women are “trying to just find their person.” She describes three male archetypes she has encountered on the apps: “He either wants to have sex with you immediately. Or he’s already in a relationship and is just so obviously noncommittal. Or he’s obsessed with you.” One guy lied to her about his job and where he lived, another confessed last-minute to being in an open relationship, and the last man she went on a date with became overly attached to her after spending only a few hours together. She flaked on their follow-up plans. “There’s a sickness where we don’t see people as people because of the apps,” she says. “We always think that there’s something ‘better’ out there.”

Anissa isn’t finding it any easier to meet guys offline. In her experience, men her age tend to pick up younger women in bars. “He’s going to go up to the scantily clad 21-year-old who’s having the time of her life,” she says. “Not three grumpy 31-year-olds.” Taylor also hasn’t had any luck in the wild after ditching dating apps. She says that in her 20s, it was easy to meet someone every weekend at Union Pool, the notoriously horny Williamsburg club. Now, she finds the bar crowd is more closed off and cliqued up. Watching Haas’s video, she thought, Someone’s sitting alone at a comedy show? Sounds about right. “In the past five years, I don’t think I’ve ever met someone out there randomly,” she adds.

Each woman offers different theories on why dating is such a drag right now. Taylor blames technology, and Spencer finds men her age are more interested in “getting shit-faced in New York City every weekend” than in committing to a relationship, partly because the COVID-19 pandemic derailed their prime sexual years. Another woman in her early 30s tells me she has been on an eight-month break from dating men because she thinks they’ve become more politically conservative. (Some studies show that young women are becoming more liberal than young men, though experts are skeptical that there’s a significant political divide between the sexes.) Haas is concerned about the online network of men’s-rights activists who want to “turn guys against women.” The one common thread throughout these conversations, though, is that the women believe their romantic priorities are fundamentally different from those of guys their age. That may not be a new problem (see: Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus), but it feels especially pressing in the age of Andrew Tate and swiping left.

Taylor still feels hopeful that she’ll meet someone even if she has no idea when. But Anissa isn’t so sure. Like Spencer and Haas, the thought of being single long-term terrifies her; she doesn’t want to spend her Friday nights with her cat eating sushi. She also hates it when people tell her a relationship will happen when she stops trying to make it happen. “I think that is the biggest lie that we tell each other and ourselves,” Anissa says. “You have to look.” But where is she supposed to look, exactly? For her part, Haas wants to be more proactive about flirting IRL by complimenting hot men she sees at the grocery store or in a coffee shop. Rather than going to a bar and hoping to get hit on, she’s also forcing herself to get off the couch and hang out with friends she doesn’t normally see. “I’m just going to try and have fun and see if that helps,” she says.

On Instagram, she currently has 180 unread messages, but the DMs Haas is most excited about have been from other women in Austin asking her to hang out. If the video scores her a few new friends, it will have served a purpose — though she has thought about taking it down. “If I magically do meet somebody,” she says, “I don’t need them to be able to go to my TikTok and see me crying all over the internet.”

I don't think you'd have to for long, it seems every girl I've known so far has been in a perpetual string of relationships, I don't think I've seen any single women since high school. Even in uni it seems impossible. Shit's just fucked, I don't want to go into speed dating/online dating because it seems just... awful.
It amazes me about my Facebook friends some of who I went to High School with, I'm old, okay. Anyway, there's a woman "Oh, I just finished divorcing my abusive husband." 2 weeks later: "Look at my new boyfriend." 2 more weeks later: "We're going to be married."

I don't think any of the women have stayed single for any actual length of time.

I was single for years, nobody was knocking at my door, but the mate I mentioned earlier used to do this. She’d hop from one bloke to another. I used to talk to her and try to say that she would be better off just chilling for a bit rather than shacking up with someone who was unsuitable. She’d have a go at me for dissing her new man and not speak to me and then a few months later she’d be at my door in tears at what he’d done. Rinse and repeats
I think a lot of people can’t cope with any kind of solitude at all. I once spoke to a colleague who said that being alone frightened her and made her feel like she didn’t exist.
But you have to be happy by yourself before you can be happy with anyone else I think.
I will give a break to people who have been married years and then lose a spouse and find solitude hard, that must be tough, but for everyone else, it does you good to live alone and be by yourself for a while.

Women generally stay with their current boyfriend until they have the next one lined up - there's always somebody waiting in the wings. I dated a woman for nearly five years and she was with officially with somebody else two weeks after we broke up. It didn't really bother me because I'd been looking for a graceful exit from that situation anyway, but even so I was single for 3+ years after that.

Just like women are desperate to remain in the good graces of the tribe far more than men, they're also far more fearful of not being in a relationship.

I don't think you grasp how fortunate you are. You're quite lucky that you got out of this game when you did. Its so radically different now from even when I was younger. Things that worked before, don't work now at all. It's crazy how much the world changed in just a few years.
I am not fortunate; I am very results-oriented and I plan far in advance.
This strategy will always work for pretty teenage girls who understand university is for getting married and getting a degree, not "finding yourself" or "exploring your sexuality". You leave university with a degree and a engagement ring. You want both to be of as high a standard as you could possibly achieve. You've got four years: get the job done.
The wifing-up value of such a girl will never be higher, not the least because similarly-aged lads with excellent prospects or (better yet) considerable inheritances and trust funds also have no fucking sense, and do not realise that they do not need to be leaving university with a wife. Once they are drowning in that "first real love" bullshit, reel them the fuck in, miss. Once a lad is looking at you with an assessor's eye, it's already too late to get a decent future.
My husband's a lovely person; kind, clever, hard-working, loves me very much. I'm very lucky to have him, I know.
He was also frankly stupid enough to let me take the entire house in my name "because you see darling, I put all the capital in, we'll change this later on", and "for tax purposes" and "but I will be a housewife and need a pension", let me own the entirety of what is now a very successful business. He has an excellent salary and is a good husband and father. He also basically can't afford to ever decide he might like to replace me.
If he was shopping for a wife ten years after he did, there is absolutely no fucking way he would have let me get away with any of that bullshit. But he was very young, and he was thinking with his dick and the dying embers of childish belief in romance, and I made sure he always had some good rivals in the field in case he got complacent. Your beta orbiters have a use.
It is also very important if the lad has, or is likely to get, money, that you become the first wife and have the first set of children. You want first grab at the estate in the divorce settlement, and the eldest kids are always the favourites. Plus, the existence of older kids cuts down the amount of money available for later kids and later wives.
If your life plan as a very young woman is marriage and children, there is absolutely no point whatsoever in waiting to pull that trigger. You need to lock in those gains. The marriage market only gets worse the older you get. Jane Austen knew this and nothing has actually changed in that respect.
The 'trad hetero marriage' is like how the incels and the MGTOW and the singletons or whatever all describe it: a contract whereby a woman trades her beauty and fertility for a man's material goods, now and in future. If you want that for yourself, get it early, because the 'good catches' are all caught long before they are 25 - on both sides.
Is that romantic? No. Is life romantic? No. Life is brutally practical. I grew up poor. True love doesn't pay any bills, and it doesn't feed your children. If you think otherwise, keep looking and hunting for that 'soulmate' or that 'perfect match'. May your quest be blessed, and I wish you all the luck in the world with it.
It may not be a popular set of values, but I am happy with my life and family. Nae regrets

Porn ruined men and social media ruined women. Both give people completely distorted ideas of what an actual relationship looks like, along with unreasonable standards for a partner. Combine it with the fact that nobody has a plan for what their relationship is supposed to accomplish (shoutout to @isalaide for that, if nothing else) and you get a disaster of serial relationships and "situationships" and incels and women telling men to step up and every other thing under the sun pushed by TikTok and Twitter to farm engagement so people get mad and share it.

Men and women both have problems in this, and they're difficult to compare directly like that. I think men's problems are worse, but despite my best efforts I'm biased; someone who's lived the other half of that would probably take the opposite stance, I expect. Regardless, I have two choices: seething about it online and praising Saint Elliot, or touching grass and making the best of it. There aren't any moral victory points for dying alone out of spite - if you legitimately enjoy that way of life then don't compromise it to make someone else happy, but sadly a lot of the MGTOW types are just claiming sour grapes, like ok sure buddy.

Being alone really helps you process your feelings if nothing else and find your true self. Personally, I'd rather be have a few true friends than be alone and be alone than have any amount of "friends". Life is too short and precious to throw it to people who didn't, don't and won't matter to you. You always will and good company will always matter though. It's why Ibeing isn't as bad as people make it out to be: if you can't enjoy your time with, make plans, share interests and values woth another person, you're better off alone.

Man, I get planning for the future, but you come off as a fucking YuGiOh character with ALL that contingency bullshit (that I didn't read no offense) that most people would never think of when entering a realtionship nor really should.

I made sure he always had some good rivals in the field in case he got complacent. Your beta orbiters have a use.
This is the only contemptible part to me.

But hey, it worked for you.

To be honest, what she's describing isn't too much different than what the girls I grew up with instinctively knew.

Not the ones who were all "I'm going to backpack through Europe!" and "I'm going to move to NYC and be a goddess!" retards that 10 years later were living in a shitty relationship with their 3rd baby-daddy.

The ones who (Small Town here) had locked in on their targets by 8th Grade. The ones who had it all planned out. The biggest one that I knew that they looked for was "Is this man good enough to provide for me even if everything goes to shit" and "will he be good to me and the children?"

The one thing that has gotten me is just how little modern women seem to understand men. They really don't. The girls I grew up with understood us, because they had brothers, their friends had brothers, and they weren't filled up with poison by the fucking idiotic gender-war fuckheads yet. (Men are from Mars Women are From Venus bullshit) They knew we were different, hell, that's why you got married, because together you're amazing, each covering for the other's weak points.

Then there's this stupid shit: "Being friends with a woman then ghosting her when she friendzones you is PREDATORY!"

What it is, is they want all the perks of the submissive friend, who she can have emotional affairs with and get all the asspats she wants, without committing to the rest of it.

And that's just it, the sheer lack of commitment.

Why the fuck would I continue to put time in effort into a relationship that has exactly ZERO in it for me. A lot of these "oh, we were friends and then he ghosted me when I said no!" women aren't treating the guys like friends. They're treating them as emotional support animals that can double as an ATM and an Uber.

Can you imagine some of these women who were 'friends' with a man getting the phone call "Hey, I broke my leg, can you come help me out instead of going to the club to get anally dominated in the bathroom?" and actually going over to help their male "friend" out? Fuck no. It's a one way street. When the guy asks for anything more than just being a support animal that shits money, they get all "EMOTIONAL LABOR!" and "YOU AREN'T ENTITLED TO ME!"

Oh, and "emotional labor", like having to listen to your husband/boyfriend is such a big fucking deal.

Women bitch and piss and moan about the most trivial things. And the WORST part is, they don't want you to fix it, they just want to hear themselves complain and bitch and whine. Nothing makes a 'modern woman' madder than a guy listening to her latest bitch fest and saying "Here's how you fix it..." because God FORBID she put in any effort.

And they just don't understand men.

Back in the bad old days when I was dating, being friends with a woman meant I was scoping her out as well as letting her scope me out. She gets to see how I provide for myself, what kind of skills and interests I have, and I get to see the same.

I'm not buying a pig in a poke.

Friends for a few months is fine. I get to know them.

And I looked to see how they treated me. That told me a lot. And how they treated other people. Not the facade they put on to the world, but how they treat others when they think there's no repercussions. Plus, I want to see if she's going to treat me decently as a friend or if I'm nothing more than her emotional support animal that she bums rides and smokes from.

I wasn't too worried about looks. Looks fade over the decades and I'm fucking ugly. I'm willing to put up with weight gain after kids and a decade or three as long as they're still engaged in the relationship. I'm skinny, I don't want to rub bone on fucking bone when I'm trying to fuck.

And I got locked in early. The first two didn't work (yay!) but they went on to have good marriages and I was still on speaking terms with them. Third long term relationship was the good one.

But dating nowadays? If, God forbid, anything happened to my wife, I'd just make friends with the squirrels in my back yard and be that little old man who feeds squirrels, because fuck the narcissistic bullshit factories wearing a human skinsuit that we're supposed to pretend are 'modern self-actualized women' now.

At this point almost everything you are saying is the opposite of reality.

Welcome to the world of arguing with women.

How many Fareals do we need on this site?!

The difference between Fareal and isalaide is Fareal's made herself miserable and is constantly seething and pretending she's not unhappy. isalaide, at least by appearances, seems to have made some effort to find mutual happiness while still being remarkably clear-eyed about life.

Yeah well I wouldn't go that fuckin far for sure. I mean yeah, with some girls there's real interest, but there's nothing wrong with being actual platonic friends or study pals. There's no emotional dependence or whatever involved. You can talk about shit you wouldn't with the boys.

They were generally (almost exclusively) not interested at all. Conversations usually ok as long as it was a kind of student pub situation where you’re in a mixed group and there’s no expectation of romance, just a good argument. But there was never any attraction and nobody ever asked me out. Ever,
I have even been quite direct with it, (look I quite like you, would you like to go for a coffee ) and the answer was a polite no or quite harsh rejection. I wasn’t shooting above my grade either, generally liked the slightly dorky types. Such is life.
Uh huh. I'll be blunt and say there's one question you haven't answered yet: Are you fat? Because assuming everything you've said to be true it can be answered quite simply with "you're fat". Also: You might think you're not shooting above your grade with targeting "dorky" types, but they almost certainly have a differing opinion... as you've learned repeatedly now by your own admission.

Fareal : last seen Mar. 2024
isalaide: joined April. 2024.
Just saying, kiwis. Just sayin'.

Reread the tall tales thread and the logic is beat for beat the same. Also Fareal may/may not have made up the whole thing. She claims that the whole miserable wife story was just a 'creative writing exercise' while she was bored at work. I don't know which scenario is funnier for me to imagine. Bored office woman riling up the farms now doing the backpedal of the century when the jig was up, or an actual socio that wuz juss pretending 2 b retarded, yo!

Honey, singledom set in for me at about 20 when I went to college and got the message from women like you that guys under 5' 5'' should just stay out of the bars, keep playing with their model trains and computer games, or whatever, and never even bother to LOOK at you... because you have standards.
What sucks about this obsession regarding height is that height isn't even a good indicator of whether you can protect a woman or not. It only gives you the feeling or perception of protection.

And this is all besides the income debacle in relationships. Jesus.

I can respect that ruthless honesty.
Careful, they might get some bad ideas and take them a bit too far. You can never trust squirrels.
Don't you talk shit about my drinking buddies.
