I worked the polls at an elementary for several years. They never would close the damned school, and the principal would bitch every time about what an inconvenience the democratic process was for her. Of course we had a few thousand strangers come in, and about a fourth of them wanted free coffee and needed to use the bathroom. I thought where are the background checks on these people? Never mind the bunches that camped out front for the whole day because they thought sitting there would convince someone to vote for the name on the sign they were holding, they traipsed in and out all day as well. I'm all for using a public school as a precinct, it's fuck-all better than a church, but the kids should take the day off and all parts of the school not being used by democracy should be sealed to the public. Most places have teacher work days, and even 1/2 work days, why not make election day one of them instead of a random day in September or March?
