I managed to watch the new The Master and Margarita movie and I have very mixed feelings about it. I absolutely loved the setting, the casting and the acting, the movie is an amazing eye candy. Unfortunately I have some reservations when it comes to the story. I absolutely adore the novel it's based on and the movie, in my opinions, does not reflect it very well. I'll have to spoil it a little to explain what I mean.
The novel has three subplots that meet near the end.
The first, most important most detailed is about Satan and his demonic helpers visiting 1930s Moscow to cause chaos and deliver divine punishment to those who deserve it.
The second is about Jesus and Pilate.
The third is a retrospect of a writer - the Master - writing a novel that does not align with Soviet politics and is being severely punished for it, ending up in a mental hospital and telling his story to another patient. It is later revealed that the Pilate story is the Master's book.
The movie is solely focused on the Master's plot and his tragic romance with Margarita. It almost entirely gets rid of the Pilate story aside from a few scenes and Master's novel about Pilate is replaced by the actual real world "Master and Margarita" novel because it's 2024 and everything needs to be meta. Satan's subplot is very reduced and relegated to sections of the movie where the Master tells someone about the plot of his book.
As a result story that was originally touching on politics, philosophy, religion, morality, horror, comedy and romance is reduced to tragic romance with political undertones. Gone are theological debates between Jesus and Pilate or Devil's cynical snarks about human nature. Instead we get rather basic takes like "censorship bad", "artistic freedom good", "cancelling people bad". Finally, because Devil's part was relegated to fiction within the movie's world, there is no one to punish the villains, bad guys win, good guys lose, original's bittersweet ending is replaced by a fatalistic downer ending, fitting the tragic romance that the movie is.
Replacing Master's Pilate novel with a novel in which terrible things happen to Master's real life enemies makes him less of an uncompromising artist he was in the original and more like Chris Chan.

The movie reduces a story that was originally political satire, comedy, horror, romance and a philosophical\theological treatise to a well-executed tale about doomed love - more inspired by the novel than based on it. It looks great, it sounds great and it does what it intended to do well, I'm just not a big fan of what it intended to do. If it was more faithful to the source material, it would be a very strong contender to my movie of the year.
If you want to watch it, be sure to read the novel first.
This is some documentary from New Zealand that is actually hilarious. It starts off about the dangers of the Internet, but from the very beginning it's blatantly clear where it'll go. It talked about Christchurch, 2016 election, and, that's right, Gamergate, while showing Anita as the victim. While I was laughing at how blatantly one sided it was, the moment I heard the word "Gamergate" I laughed out so fucking hard I almost popped the windows.
Oh yeah, this was on TV. Polish TV. With a voiceover translation. This absolute joke of a "documentary" made by some New Zealand faggot that's nothing but the left side of the US Internet culture war being shoveled right down your throat, was shown on Polish TV totally seriously. It's a "so bad it's good" type of watch because jfc it's gay as shit.
The Righteous Gemstones just keeps getting better and better. This family has so many dark secrets and the pieces are a mystery that has the pieces slowly get out together.
I still haven't figured out if its mocking Christians because it feels like it's building up to a "with faith you can become a better person" storyline that's popular in religious movies. Just darker.

you cannot go wrong with levant either, he mostly works with carax, which also puts out some pretty good stuff. Keep in mind though, he's a student of godard and of film so some of his stuff can be odd.
More on topic, just hit the greats, Bresson, Hitchcock, Welles, Tarkovsky, Huston, Ford, Dreyer (his joan of arc was one of my top 5 films)

I am heavily biased towards French directed movies, Luc Besson is as awesome as it could get, and any movie starring Jean Reno, Tcheky Karyo, Vincent Cassel, Sami Nacery and others is a must watch for me.
An almost criminally overlooked movie is Luc Besson's first, Le Dernier Combat, unsurprisingly starring Reno, as a solitary man after some unspecified catastrophe has resulted in the obliteration of civilization and the survivors are for also unspecified reasons mute. It is in black and white and has no dialogue (well two words). It starts with Reno fucking a sex doll in an abandoned building. Then it gets depressing.
Watching a slight but amusing film from 1983, Bullshot! based on a stage play, Bullshot Crummond which was a parody of British pulp fiction and the sort of "Boy's Own" adventure stories aimed at the youth, including adventure heroes like "Bulldog" Drummond and the flying ace Biggles. Hugh "Bullshot" Crummond is the quintessential British adventure story hero, dashing, bold, jut-jawed and fearless, and manages to escape from several 'inescapable' deathtraps via a combination of ridiculous luck, coincidences, arcane knowledge and being a jut-jawed champion of England. That he can be sort of thick at times and gets his ass kicked more than once doesn't detract from this.
The film version was written by Ronald E. House, Diz White, and Alan Shearman, three of the co-writers of the original play, who had also performed it on the stage, with Shearman reprising his role as Crummond, and Diz White reprising her role as Rosemary Fenton, the somewhat ditzy but not totally dumb daughter of Professor Fenton, whose secret formula is coveted by Bullshot's old foe, the ignoble, monocle-sporting Hugo von Bruno, his femme fatale accomplice Fraulein Lenya, and the vengeful, short, balding, ugly henchman Crouch, who'd served under Crummond in the Army with the "Royal Loamshires" until Crummond accidentally ran him over with a tank, resulting in him going from a 6-foot tall ladies man into, well.
Curiously, I found that a recording of a 1979 stage production of the play was up on Youtube, one of the running gags of the play are all of the overly ambition scenes and effects carried out with obvious models, dummies, etc. like the same prop car being used for both parties in a car chase.

I read that book as, well, not a kid but I was 18? Honestly, it was largely lost on me but perhaps I just wasn't smart enough to appreciate it at the time. Perhaps I should give the book another go - I still have it on my bookshelf right here.
Onto my own "recommendation". I don't know if it's that exactly but I recently watched "Monster Mash" (there's an old film of the name, I'm talking about the recent one). It's bizarre, really bizarre. It also does a better job of launching a "Cinematic Monster Universe" than those Universal movies did - you know, The Mummy with Tom Cruise and that Dracula Untold and so on? Here they get straight to the point with Dracula gathering a team of monsters to defeat Baron Frankenstein. Near zero budget yet it has Michael Madsen as the villain and the guy playing Dracula is actually really good. Most of the cast are - they're just trapped in a terrible, terrible movie. Conversely the only actor in it you'll have heard of (Madsen) is the worst one in it as he gurns his way through a heavily American-gangster accented Frankenstein. If you like So Bad It's Good movies, this is up there. It also has the politest undead Mummy I've ever seen.
Seriously, I hope it gets a sequel just to make Universal executives cry. If they up the budget to say $200 this time as well, they could afford to have an actual rat on screen rather than someone making squeaking noises and the Dracula actor pretending to chase it.

It's, let's say, different and it's a fascinating artifact of early Soviet Union seen from a perspective different than the regular Cold War narrative we're used to. I like to call it "magical soc-realism". Give it another try and see if you like it.
Saw Margin Call last night and was wondering if there were any other good movies about 08 or the tech bubble? Big Short was pretty good as well, I would also take documentaries, kind of on a financial crisis kick at the moment.
Watching via Tubi a couple of films starring Etsuko Shihomi, one of the proteges of Japanese star Sonny Chiba, who brought an electric, primal and graceful presence onscreen. She could be easily as intense as Chiba in a film.
After appearing in a couple of the Street Fighter films, Shihomi starred in a sort of spinoff series of films, Sister Street Fighter, Sister Street Fighter: Hanging By a Thread, which was a quickly made follow-up that's gorier, sleazier, more frenetic, more stylistic and has more outrageous opponents than the first, and The Return of the Sister Streetfighter, and the unofficial sequel marketed as an official one, Sister Street Fighter: Fifth Level Fist, which are not currently on Tubi.
There's also 13 Steps of Maki, a film based on a manga, naturally. It's a "pinky violence" exploitation film mash-up that mixed girl gangs, women in prison, yakuza, and martial arts action into a single film. Shihomi plays the leader/protective tiger mom of an all girl gang, The Stray Cats who dish out vigilante street justice. One day they have an altercation with rich girl Takako Ebihara (Misa Ohara), whose father operates the successful Ebihara Tourism company. She's in a hurry in her Pontiac Trans Am and runs the Stray Cats' Jeep off the road. Her haughty attitude rubs the Stray Cats the wrong way and so begins a tit-for-tat of revenge. It just so happens, Ebihara Tourism critically relies on a Yakuza gang to supply it with young women for work overseas and Takako’s father is being pressured to bring the chief, Mr. Daimon into the company legitimately, risking Ebihara Tourism’s polished image. When Takako asks her father's associates in aiding her with revenge, well, the gangsters already have a grudge against Maki and her girl gang for protecting a young woman who escaped their clutches and so they capture the Stray Cats and have Maki imprisoned at a work farm facility under the supervision of a corrupt warden and some grudge-holding cellmates, who'd already had their asses kicked by Maki at the beginning of the film. The important thing is that it leads to Maki destroying people with a set of red nunchucks.
Finished Hannibal after starting it ten years ago (yes seriously). Season 2 is some of the best TV ever made, but season 3 lost a lot of the momentum for me. Still enjoyable and the gore effects are insane. 9/10 for a TV series.

The tv shows that take up the most room on my server are Star Trek and Law & Order, and the best of those are The Next Generation (of course) and Criminal Intent (although classic flavour is very close behind) but as long as you don't bother with anything from after the world ended in 2012 you can find gold in any of the series from either franchise.
