Hey folks,
We've been reliably informed that journalists from a major newspaper have been reaching out to people in online trans support spaces specifically regarding self-medicating, with a particular focus on under-18s.
While /r/transgenderUK (along with every other trans-related subreddit on this website, to my knowledge) doesn't allow discussion of self-medication for under-18s, it's a fact that it does occur, and a number of people here may well be doing so. For harm reduction reasons, just in case anyone in that situation is contacted by anyone working for the media as a result of their interactions on this subreddit, we have to remind people - don't do it!
If you're approached, your first instinct should be to not respond. If that's unavoidable, then please read Trans Safety Network's Media Engagement Safety Guide before saying anything. It's extremely unlikely that any journalist working for a British newspaper will have your best interests at heart - given the editorial slants of every major newspaper in this country, you can rely upon the fact that they'll be reaching out to you with the intention of writing a hit piece against trans healthcare more generally. Engaging with them will be setting yourself up to get taken advantage of.
If you're contacted, please consider referring any enquiries to established trans community support and advocacy organisations with experience dealing with the media instead - they'll likely be far better placed to answer any questions than you are.
Some organisations you should consider referring any enquiries to are as follows:
Gendered Intelligence
Scottish Trans
TransgenderNI
Mermaids
Trans Safety Network
I can't emphasise enough how important it is to keep yourselves safe - please don't let yourself get put in a position where you'll be taken advantage of. These organisations exist to handle this sort of stuff on your behalf, and they can generally be relied upon to have your back - which is absolutely not the case for anyone working for the media under these circumstances.
