Double post time.
The Archthrones overhaul/conversion/whatever they're calling it demo came out.
It's Demon's Souls in DS3 but without the atmosphere. Most of it is reused assets as expected but they did put in a reshuffled version of Heide from DS2 which I think is the first time I've seen a map from another game added.
It's also unstable. I had to nab a rolled back version of the .exe which has prevented crashes so far but there's tens of pages on the nexus page discussing issues.
I only played for a bit and the first boss I reached was some fire variant of the sickle giant from the Bloodborne chalice dungeons.

Is it good? I've tried other overhaul mods in the past such as Cinders (it's shit) and The Convergence (pretty good), this looks far more impressive.

Hard to say. Initially I was disappointed that it was reusing most of the maps as I figured this would be the first time someone effectively made a new game within the engine, but going back and rewatching the older teaser material, that never seemed to be the intention. It doesn't deviate from existing DS3 mechanics like The Convergence did but it does add a shield poke for some weapons, Elden Rings counterattack, and an equivalent of the physick flask.
Here are my observations so far, bearing in mind I haven't played that much:
  • There are less bonfires than in vanilla DS3.
  • Areas tend to have more than one boss.
  • There isn't any new magic that I've noticed but I expect there to be some.
  • The Carthus area might actually be a new map but could also be a retextured Gael arena with more shit stitched on.
  • There's a ton of likely placeholder items everywhere.
  • The new bosses are better than any of the ones added in The Convergence.
If you like DS3, it's just more DS3. It feels a bit undercooked but if all it was meant to do was show proof of concept, then it passed with flying colors.
Something funny I noticed was that in the trailer, there is an npc in desert sorceress attire whereas in the demo, that npc was given some other outfit. I wonder if there are some weirdos on the team who've been seething for a decade over that outfit.

Dark Souls 1 is a walking simulator. You spend 80% of the time just walking.

The areas are all gigantic and empty, you will never fight an enemy because it's useless (they drop like 13 souls and you can and should just walk past them), the loot is garbage and is mostly just more souls that you don't need. There is nothing interesting to explore, not even upgrade materials since everyone just buys these from Andre and that dude in Sen's Fortress. The game is you just walking and walking till the next fog gate. What a piece of shit garbage game.

And the runbacks for the bosses are all terrible. Again, even more walking. Every Death is basically one or two extra minutes of walking without anything interesting happening. The level design is tedious and the areas are all enormous to make you walk even more. It's essentially a trolling game.

The situation is so bad that everyone just skips the whole game. Everyone - including the so-called fans of this heap of shit - starts with the Master Key to skip the entirety of the early game, later on, they jump the staircase in Anor Londo, then they skip the catacombs and dukes archives because the prison is a shitty filler, they memorize how to navigate the tomb of the giants so they don't even need to grab the lantern. Deep down nobody likes this game, I genuinely believe everybody is just pretending because if it was any good nobody would be skipping so much of this game.

Dark Souls is shit, seriously, It's an exercise in boredom.

The silver knight sword and spear from DS1 were cool as hell and it's a shame the later titles didn't really have anything quite the same. DS2 still had its own share of incredibly good spears and polearms, though, so there is that.

Dark Souls is shit, seriously, It's an exercise in boredom.
As biased as I am toward the first Dark Souls I can't even deny a lot of shit you said here, spare for the enemy drops; likely a moot point either way since grinding for items/souls tends to be its own time sink.
When I had more free time I didn't care too much and still enjoyed gradually turning characters into powerhouses, but having burnt through it as much as I did I can definitely see nowadays why some people don't want to bother dumping time into it.
How well it's aged is debatable, I'd say, but it certainly brought an interesting new experience for its time,

I've played other darksouls 3 mods (cinders/convergence/call of the aybss) and this is by far the best. i guess it helps that it started development so late in comparison to the other mods which allowed it to take advantage of the improved moding tools which were developed as a result of elden ring's release. its not just better than other mods because it was made using the improved modding tools however, it really has a better art direction and sense of themeatics / quality which the other mods don't. The cinders mod was basically just add as much crap into the game as possible without changing it. Convergence was basically reskinned bosses while adding takey magics like druids and vampires (lame). call of the abyss had the potential to be good, but it was too goofy with its gothic themes and buggy/incomplete, and the developer had a mental breakdown.

The Archthrones mod is a true and proper overhaul mod. it almost feels like playing a new game. its map design/quests/bosses are awesome. the worst thing about the mod is probably the voice-acting / lack of invasions.
I've almost completed the demo and I'm left wanting more. i hope they wait until the elden ring DLC releases to use some of the character rigs and stuff from it to improve the mod. I'm even more optimistic about Arch Thrones than the Darksouls 1 Nightfall mod that's still in development.

Cinders was absolute trash and I never played the other one but I appreciated the Convergence for trying to make its own systems, and I'm very much looking forward to playing that team's ER overhaul in 2-3 years. Archthrones doesn't do that as it's functionally just more DS3 which is good and all but I think DS3 is mechanically the worst of the lot. I wonder how deep they were when ER came out.
In terms of quality though, Archthrones is 100% the pinnacle.

The one who's done perfect no damage restricted playthroughs of DMC1 and Viewtiful Joe? Literally the only person on youtube who actually cares about games?

Why is it mechanically the worst? The only things it doesn't have are posie and duel-wielding. Its movement and combat are much smoother than the previous two games, in my opinion.
It plays better than DS2 for sure but I personally find the movement and combat inferior to DS1. Personal preference; I think DS1's movesets chain together better. I've never liked weapon arts and even in 2016 I guessed that somewhere down the line we'd have something like ER's AoW. Very few felt that useful and it was rare that a weapon art made the weapon good. ER improved on the unique weapon end but still suffered from a glut of useless ones. DS3's magic wasn't that interesting either as it demanded a comparatively higher stat investment and made pyromancy less useful. I like that hexes were improved upon from their DS2 mush but wish they kept them as their own school. I think it's a vastly better game than DS2 but lacks DS2's zaniness and DS1's delicate mechanical nuance. That's mostly my pvp autism. I maybe should have clarified that DS1 is a much simpler game but for the pvp alone it's my favorite. DS3's world isn't as intricate or well designed but its bosses are better overall.

edit: a word

The introduction of weapon arts severely limited the amount of new weapons its clear thats where most of its animation work went. There's no new weapon classes, twin blades and lances got nixed because itd require them to make them anew since 2 was on a different engine.

Quality builds were so strong that no matter what weapon 40/40 str/dex was the best build except in rare cases where going 66 str (99 when 2 handed) was best for things like great club.

edit: we also lost more than powerstancing, DS2 had more support for dual wielding that still hasnt returned as recently as Elden Ring. If you swap hands in DS2 the attack animation comes out faster to allow for more true combos this let you use quick pokes like rapier/dagger and combo into medium weapons for confirms but cost more stamina on swap.

Casters got absolutely shafted for damage in the same game that introduced blue flasks, the scaling for int/fth is backloaded so you need to get to 60 and also use specific armor pieces so everyone has the same build. Even then most spells are far too slow and weak and theres very few new ones compared to DkS1.

Spells in general just are way too slow for pvp, you have like 5 sorceries, 3 pyromancies, 1 miracle and zero hexes that are even "viable" against a player who has played more than once against a caster.

If that wasn't enough you can't infuse weapons and then buff them for multiplicative damage like in 2 and very few spell scaling weapons can be buffed so again quality all the way.

edit: For some baffling reason every weapon with inherent elemental damage would have terrible elemental scaling so itd perform best dex/str. There's so many fire, magic, lightning and even dark weapons that are balanced for physical damage only. The dragonslayer greataxe, the Gargoyle flamespear, the dancer blades, no matter what its str/dex and the elemental damage is basically cosmetic. Its infuriating how limited your arsenal is if you wanna play as any other build. And to make it even worse its so hard to get darkmoon blade, it takes forever because blue summoning doesnt work because invasions are so heavily stacked against the invader. And what do you get for your trouble? You can buff a few weapons like the saint's bident which is a ridiculously short spear that does good damage for 3 minutes while buffed.

edit: they also nerfed hallow/luck builds into the dirt rather than just fixing how broken bleed was so theres a worthless stat that does nothing other than increase drop rates and becauss that stat exists they made some drops incredibly low, especially all the covenant items which are impossible to get because of how specific covenant multiplayer is.

40% health reduction for summons (far more if overleveled coop with a friend) was not sustainable late game where madir 1 shots all but the most tanky builds.

Speaking of Madir thats a dark dragon, its resistant to fire and dark, if you are a 40/40 int/fth build thats your only elements. Unlike past games that offered holy/enchanted options so magic builds can get physical weapons for exactly this purpose theres no such option in DS3, instead theres 2 awkward infusions which gimp performance so you can get a very small amount of hp/fp recovery.

Charged R2's return from Bloodborne but they don't do enough damage to justify the wind-up and are totally useless in pvp. They also cost way too much stamina, dont combo like 2 R1's do meaning its less damage at the end and uncharged do a sneeze of damage.

Weapon balance is dogshit, most weapons have the same weapon arts in the same class, unique weapon arts are too slow and flashy and then do comedically low damage. The longest reach in class is often also the best damage which removes choices entirely and leave the game with like 6 weapons so optimal youd be stupid not to pick them.

Bosses are all homogenized like in 2 and now they can be stunlocked for visceral attacks.

Armor balance is also a mess theres 8 pieces which are so unbelievably good weight to defenses that theres no choices there. Silver/black knight shields have the same problem outclassing all great shields and being light enough to slot into any build.

edit: shields have been severely nerfed so you cant even use them against bosses, they overcorrected from 1 allowing too much passive play and forced everyone to dodge everything (something youd naturally adapt to anyway once youve played enough of these games)

And overbuffed dodging, theres too many I-frames per dodge and the low stamina cost has been carried over from bloodborne where you can dodge an absurd 16 times at 40 endurance before running out. for comparison in 1/2 you could only roll 4 times.

I probably missed a bunch, DS3 comes across as phoned in, the 3rd game to a tired setting only made because they were contractually obligated to make it, its filled with fan service for the previous games, all the armors/weapons return, theres level call backs despite the games taking place thousands of years apart. Its just lazy and empty (cant call it soulless)

Oh my god how could I forget how badly they fucked up armor values. All armor pieces provide a flat percentage based damage resistance.
The numbers aren't exact but basically:
head 5%
gloves 5%
legs 10%
chest 15%

These values are provided regardless of whether your armor is a tattered loincloth or Havel's set. This is the most significant portion of damage mitigation armor provides to the point where as long as you're wearing a mid-range set its practically no different from Havel's with none of the downsides. This was done so the devs could just crank up damage about 40% knowing everyone had that much resistance and didn't have to accommodate different playstyles and builds or do any amount of real planning or balancing. Not only does this once again remove any meaningful choices, it punishes people who like to be without a piece or 2 to see their character because literal rags provide a huge benefit over nothing. It just makes no sense why they did it this way other than laziness.

4.7 + 13.2 + 3.6 + 7.9 = 29.4
Here's the exact numbers. The difference between naked and the worst armor in the game (literal rags) is over 30% resistance to damage.

My 1050ti died around 3 weeks ago and I'm using my 750 as a backup till summer blows over. I'm trying to play the PTDE with dsfix and mousefix but the camera is so fucking sensitive especially with lock on toggled. I don't remember ptde being this bad, is there any way to fix it other than lowering sensitivity, I really don't want to fuck around with sensitivity.

Don't know if it belongs here since it's a Souls clone but "No Rest For The Wicked" looks like the most generic Souls like ever made. I'm amazed it wasn't made by Ubisoft.

Armor values are for faggots who get hit a lot. Just don't get hit. Fashion over Function.
You're kinda missing the point which is that every single aspect of the game's design exists to undermine player choices. When a game has combat this simple decision making should be stronger, something DS1 had no trouble doing. Its also weird how jank 3 is when its so derrivative of DS1's code base.

I'm also breaking down mechanics and there's no getting around the fact that armor values are poorly implemented in the laziest way possible.
