Putin’s long rule has ruined Russia

Vladimir Putin’s announcement that he’s running again for president of Russia has put me in a deep funk. Will this guy never retire? Will one never be able to see Russia as just Russia, and not as Putin Russia? Will he really stick around for another two terms, until 2036 — even beating Joseph Stalin’s record of 25 years in power by more than a decade?

Putin became Russia’s leader in 1999, when he was appointed prime minister. Who could have imagined then that the scrappy little KGB agent with the weak chin and ski lift nose would grace the halls of the Kremlin for another three and a half decades?

He came on like gangbusters, declaring that he’d manage democracy and make Russia great again, while establishing the image of a hypermasculine macho who rode horses bare-chested, wielded phallically obvious rifles and knives, practiced judo, drove leggy Russian ladies crazy, and, of course, outwitted the West, ruthlessly pursued Russian interests, and claimed to want to restructure the world.

Very little of that public persona is evident today. His tough-guy face is bloated. His former swagger has been replaced with a lumbering gait. He speaks uncertainly. Putin has gotten old and he looks it. He’s changed, for the worse, but his hold on Russia’s throne remains unshaken — even if only more or less.

I wouldn’t be kvetching about this particular dictator’s staying power were it not for three things.

First, he’s dominated Russian politics for almost as long as I’ve studied the place. Frankly, it’s getting boring to wake up to the same inscrutable face and the same kleptocratic tyrant who’s utterly predictable in his quest for ill-gotten lucre and bloody power. Is there really no one in Russia capable of replacing this guy and making Russian studies more interesting for the likes of me?

Second, the man has been a disaster — for Russia, for Ukraine, for the world. He transformed Russia from a respected country that was becoming more or less “normal,” to use a word Russians like, into a brutal and bloodthirsty rogue state feared by everyone and respected only by the North Koreans. In so doing he’s committing genocide and waging war against a country that dared to think of itself as a European democracy — Ukraine. The longer he stays, the worse things will get for everyone.

Third, he’s jaundiced the way I view Russia. I used to think of the country as one part mysterious, one part fascinating, and one part dangerous. No more. Now, when I view Russia and Russians, I don’t think of Pushkin or Tchaikovsky or Tolstoy. I think only of the Gulag, Ivan the Terrible, and Vladimir the just as Terrible. I don’t hear the music, I don’t see the paintings, I don’t see the novels. Instead, I hear the groans of countless victims of the Russian and Soviet secret police. I see barbed wire and concentration camps and starving peasants and mutilated bodies.

Frankly, when I think of Putin, Adolf Hitler comes to mind, and when I think of Russia, it’s Nazi Germany that comes to mind. And I suspect I feel about Putin Russia the same way many Germans and Jews felt about Germany in the 1930s. Surely the land of “poets and thinkers” couldn’t descend into the savagery Hitler represented. Surely the nation that produced Immanuel Kant and Johann Wolfgang von Goethecouldn’t unleash war and commit genocide. And yet it did.

None of this absolves Russians of the responsibility they bear for making Putin possible and for tolerating his crimes. Instead, hundreds of thousands have lost their lives fighting a stupid, criminal war in Ukraine. During World War I, Russians deserted from the front en masse. Others risked their lives for various revolutionary causes. Today’s Russians, alas, prefer to pretend there is no war, even as their fathers, brothers, and sons return en masse in body bags.

It’s all, or almost all, Putin’s fault. For more than two decades he’s beaten into Russians that he’s the godlike patriarch, a macho Messiah, and that they are his sheep. Life is easier when you can, as Erich Fromm put it years ago, “escape from freedom.” Criminality becomes normality, evil becomes good, good becomes evil — all sense of right and wrong is dulled, and one expects the Great Leader to resolve all one’s moral issues. And he does — by killing while pretending he’s not killing.

I confess that I’ve disliked Putin since day one: there’s something about the KGB and SS that rubs me the wrong way, I guess. Now, I just pray that, sooner rather than later, his puffy visage will disappear forever.

Putin isn't special. He doesn't have the energy of Peter the Great (or Ivan the Terrible) to truly remake Russia in any meaningful way. The defining characteristic of Putin's Russia until very recently was apathy. The reason Putin stays in charge is that he was placed in charge and any attempt to replace him would do more harm than good for those around him. There were a dozen other grey figures in Russian politics who could have achieved the same.

The guy who wrote the article is Alexander Motyl, a Ukrainian. Of course he would prefer a weak and self-hating Russia. He's been schizoposting about Russia being a glorified Finno-Uralic horde for at least the past decade.
I could tell he was ESL immediately from unidiomatic sentences like: "Will this guy never ever retire? Will one never ever be able to see Russia as just Russia, and not as Putin Russia?" This, coupled with the tactlessness of the propaganda, really shows that as incompetent as the western apparatchiks are, they are still heads and shoulders above the lackeys from the satellite states.

Are you sure? Really sure?

This is San Francisco now, once one of the most beautiful cites in the US a mere 25 years ago:

San Francisco, instead of helping these unfortunates, decides to pocket most of the funds meant for that purpose and instead hires people to wash the feces and other human waste off the streets. Most of the Wast Coast cities are like this, East Coast cities, while not as bad are just as dreary and are losing residents by the thousands every month.

Now look at Moscow:

Or St Petersburg

No homeless encampments or street shit cleaners in sight. No Gay Pride but hey, I'd manage.
Judging a country by the big cities is pointless. Shithole countries (whether you say Russia is one or not) spend a lot on making their big cities look good since tourists and diplomats will never leave them, the question is whether exiting the capital will suddenly regress the surroundings to the middle ages.

The USA, the superpower, has big cities that even Zimbabweans turn their noses up at. When you exit our capital, Washington DC, there are quite a lot of places that have no sewage systems, no sidewalks, no cell coverage and zero public transportation in Virginia/West Virginia. Are we a shithole country? Wait don't answer that lol

My point is that its an altogether stupid thing to sperg about, but for other reasons you cite.

Living in a shack with an outhouse in a remote village in southern Mexico with no indoor plumbing is cleaner-and safer-than living on Park Avenue in Manhattan is right now. Cartels don't target foreigners unless they're involved with the drug trade, leave native folks alone, and said native folk have a homogeneous society where rules of conduct are enforced. However, I live in the US so roving criminal bands of feral joggers, drugs addicts and politicians demanding more illegals come sleep on our streets so they can have their lawns mowed is the norm for a big city because our ruling elites spend our funds on foreign wars and entanglements instead of improving our nation (the swath of Park Avenue I'm referring to is the wealthiest congressional district in the entire USA, btw, where you need to have a personal bodyguard just to fend off the plebes).

tl;dr you are right but even so-called shithole countries can be better to live in than the USA in its current iteration. Quality of life matters.

Putin's a liberal. His probable successors? Not so much. The West should be very careful what it wishes for.
Do you think the West should fear Russia getting in someone conservative wanting deregulation? Because left and right or liberal and conservative means a lot of different shit in different countries.

I'm not sure it even matters in Putin's case since the main issue people have (or at least other countries) is he's wanting to take over other regions. China can put its own citizens in camps and most countries will look the other way while happily making use of Chinese manufacturing for its cheap plastic crap. Putin made the mistake of actually affecting other countries a massive amount by helping foist millions of refugees upon them. Not the wisest of moves if he wanted to be left alone.

Other countries take over other regions all the time, even right now, and noone even raises an eyebrow. And I thought refugees were great for muh economy, weren't they? Or does that only apply to illiterate 65IQ Africans?

Russia can try to take over its neighbors, it just sucks at doing so. Western Ukraine remains mostly untouched by Russia because they haven’t even managed to reach that area in a roughly 2 year time span.

That doesn't affect ordinary people in the West; it does affect businesses/corporate entities which rely on exploiting the natural resources/raw goods of those "other countries".
millions of refugees
Or as Poland and Germany see them, cheap labor. Ukrainians are the Mexicans of Europe.

Its almost as if prolonging this conflict was the goal since someone in the West will benefit from it, regardless of the outcome.
Western Ukraine
Russia doesn't want it; even Poland, which Western Ukraine was a part of until after WW2, doesn't really want it. It will probably be the buffer zone between Russia and Poland, which makes everyone happy, except the Western Ukrainians.

Why would refugees be good for the economy? You have to take on a weird far leftist or globalist position to imagine massive amounts of refugees aren't going to affect Western Europe's opinion of the whole conflict or that it'd somehow be some net positive to have a huge number of poor people flooding your country.

Also what countries are taking over regions that matter? Some South American or African countries starting shit with each other doesn't matter much in comparison to Ukraine which can affect energy prices for Western Europe. If Nigeria decides to invade Ethiopia that also doesn't typically mean a fuck ton of refugees being sent to Western Europe or North America.

Azerbaijan offensive just couple of months ago? Define "regions that matter", I'm sure that one mattered to the Armenians.
I suppose regions that would negatively affect global energy trade, cause millions of refugees into the EU, or just generally affect more than just between a couple tiny regions?

Some Armenians getting displaced into another part of Armenia doesn't necessarily affect that much. Feels like a much more self contained conflict in the grand scheme of things.

There's an old joke from Soviet times.
"What's long, green, and smells like sausage?"
"The Moscow-Tver train!"

When people from the suburbs need to take a train to the big city to buy groceries, you know damn well shit's fucked. The Czars funneled their nation's wealth into Moscow and St. Petersburg, the USSR into Moscow and Leningrad, and modern Russia is no different. There's a reason @Feline Supremacist showed off only those two cities as an example of Russia's "splendor".
southern Mexico
So, I guess Northern Mexico where the cartels will kidnap you to serve as a sacrificial victim for their sicario initiation rituals just doesn't exist then? All you're telling me is that Western elites make the places where they live shit and Russian elites do the same to the places they don't live, and I'm forced to choose between one brand of shit or another. Huh, its almost like in less heated times us Amerikiwis all called the cities our "urban containment zones".

Funny way to spell 1547
Russia had two visions of its future, and Ivan the Terrible set the course with the Rape of Astrakhan. A shame that as a border region they chose to emulate the Mongol dispoilers over the western kingdoms.

Which makes their war on the Ukrainians very ironic, because Ukraine (the cradle of Rus civilization) was forged largely by Swedish explorers and Polish/German merchants and adventurer second son nobles. Moscow took what Kiev had, then said "they made this". Then burned it to shit.

So, I decided to look up just what happened in 1547, and lo and behold!
Ivan IV Vasilyevich (Russian: Иван IV Васильевич; 25 August 1530 – 28 March [O.S. 18 March] 1584), commonly known as Ivan the Terrible, was Grand Prince of Moscow and all Russia from 1533,and Tsar of all Russia, from 1547 until his death in 1584. He was the first Russian monarch to be crowned as tsar.

Ivan IV was the eldest son of Vasili III by his second wife Elena Glinskaya, and a grandson of Ivan III and Sophia Palaiologina. He succeeded his father after his death, when he was three years old. A group of reformers united around the young Ivan, crowning him the tsar of all Russia in 1547 at the age of 16. Ivan's reign was characterised by Russia's transformation from a medieval state to an empire under a tsar, but at an immense cost to its people, and long-term economy.

In the early years of his reign, Ivan ruled with the group of reformers known as the Chosen Council and established the Zemsky Sobor, a new assembly convened by the tsar. He also revised the legal code and introduced reforms, including elements of local self-government, as well as establishing the first Russian standing army, the streltsy. Ivan conquered the khanates of Kazan and Astrakhan, and significantly expanded the territory of Russia.

After he had consolidated his power, Ivan rid himself of the advisers from the Chosen Council and triggered the Livonian War, which ravaged Russia and resulted in the loss of Livonia and Ingria, but allowed him to establish greater autocratic control over the Russian nobility, which he violently purged using Russia's first political police, the oprichniki. The later years of Ivan's reign were marked by the massacre of Novgorod and the burning of Moscow by the Tatars.
Ah, what a pleasant man. For those curious about the oprichniki:
Modern theories suggest that the motivating purpose for the organization and existence of the Oprichniki was to oppress people or groups opposed to the Tsar. Known to ride black horses and led by Ivan himself, the group was known to terrorize civilian populations. Sometimes called the cromeshnina (selected) because they were a hand-picked body, the Oprichniki dressed in black garb, similar to a monastic habit, and carried attached to their saddles a severed dog's head (to sniff out treason and enemies of the Tsar), or an actual wolf's head and a broom (to sweep them away). The wolf's head was also symbolic of the hounds of hell tearing at the heels of the Tsar's enemies. The logistics of acquiring the canine heads was quite gruesome. Due to the lack of taxidermy, the severed and drained heads would only remain frozen for the winter months of the year. To maintain their image, the Oprichnik required a constant supply of fresh heads. Ivan himself carried a fearsome canine head made of iron with jaws that would open and snap shut as his horse galloped.

The Oprichniki were ordered to execute anyone disloyal to Ivan and used various methods of torture to do so, including quartering, death by boiling, impalement, and roasting victims tied to poles over an open fire.

When Ivan declared himself the "Hand of God", he selected 300 of the Oprichniki to be his personal "brotherhood" and live in his castle at Aleksandrovskaia Sloboda near Vladimir. At 4 a.m., these select Oprichniki attended a sermon given by Ivan, then performed the day's ritual executions. The Oprichniki sought to lead an externally ascetic lifestyle, like the monks they emulated, but it was punctuated by acts of cruelty and debauchery. Ivan sang while his Oprichniki ate, eating only when they had finished. At 9 p.m. he went to bed, listening to stories told by three blind men.

In the Novgorod incident, the Oprichniks killed an estimated 1500 "big people" (nobles), although the actual number of victims is unknown.
Daily ritual executions, the mass slaughter of dogs for a ready supply of fresh heads to tie to their saddles, and a royal license to engage in wanton torture and cruelty.
The closer one is to the US in Mexico the shittier it gets. Besides, our spooks are paranoid about any Americans getting in on their gun/drug trade.
Northern Mexico was a violent, war-torn shithole before the USA ever expanded its borders there thanks to the Apache and Comanche, and even after our borders expanded there but before the CIA was a twinkle in the eye of the Feds various Mexican revolutionaries and bandidos were using it as a hideout. Try again.

Oh my sweet summer child...
