The situation in Texas is made even worse by a massive shortage of OBG-YNs, particularly in rural areas. Doctors are getting burnt out and leaving because they can't properly care for patients due to the abortion ban. I wouldn't doubt there are spuds being created due to women being unable to access maternity care.

There's nothing pro-life about forcing women to gestate doomed fetuses. There's no way you can get a healthy, living baby out of an anencephaly fetus. It's going to die no matter what. I'm sure these women wished more than anyone that there was a way they could get a living baby out of their pregnancies.

That had to be done by a Democrat with the very politician who got SB8 crafted and signed. Even so, the exemptions are narrow. The Charlotte Lozier Institute, an organization that openly says there is no such thing as a dangerous pregnancy, and the National Right to Life bar ANY changes to the law. None. They want no exemptions.

That lawsuit brought by those women, some of whom were mentioned here, had one nearly vomit in the courthouse because her much wanted baby had a deadly condition. Sad to say that stories like that are the only way to get people pissed enough for change.

Fuck, this is terrifying.

It isn't just Texas. Idaho closed entire maternity wards in certain areas, and OBGYNs across the board are refusing to work in states with restrictions, especially students.

It's probably an combination of people overestimating the absolute limits of medical science, an specific faction or two of fundies (I know that Quiverfull is one of them), and some random argument against eugenics (although, the only people who actually mentioned this are an small group of speds, so take it with an grain of salt).

Wasn't one of the women in Texas in the lawsuit someone who experienced that and was only allowed an abortion after she started going septic? One of the articles I posted mentioned another woman who refused antibiotics after loosing all her amniotic fluid specifically to induce infection so she could get an abortion. It's horrific shit and I wouldn't be surprised if women have already died because of it.

Would that include even downs fetuses with other abnormalities, like say a downs fetus that has a fatal, untreatable heart defect? I know that can happen since trisomies are serious shit.

I wonder if any other states with total abortion bans have had an increase in infant mortality rates like Texas due to women being forced to give birth to spuds with lethal anomalies. I remember hearing about a woman in Florida forced to give birth to a fetus with severe Potters syndrome, who predictably suffocated to death from not having a properly formed respiratory tract minutes after birth.

Even the ones that don't have lethal anomalies, I wonder how many will end up in foster care or even murdered by their parents who never wanted them in the first place

Thankfully, she was able to drive to Virginia to get the abortion.

The maternal care desert issue is also deeply concerning, especially since even bringing abortion back probably won't fix that issue (at least not right away). I was reading in articles about women ending up giving birth in parking lots and gas stations and shit while driving however many hours to the nearest hospital with a labor&delivery unit. I wouldn't be surprised if it's led to the creation of otherwise preventable issues like babies getting brain damage from complications and not being able to get to a hospital in time and shit.

I'm not sure what to make of the claims of 300-400 seizures a day, renal failure from epilepsy meds and Dravet syndrome that the doctors didn't bother to diagnose bc "he'd be dead soon anyways". I don't think that's how the doctors told her, lol. She's projecting her frustration onto them. Nor do I believe they fired her as a patient simply for wanting to cut his meds down bc they weren't helping.
