Sinéad O’Connor, acclaimed Dublin singer, dies aged 56

Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor has died at the age of 56.

The acclaimed Dublin performer released 10 studio albums, while her song Nothing Compares 2 U was named the number one world single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards.

Ms O’Connor was presented with the inaugural award for Classic Irish Album at the RTÉ Choice Music Awards earlier this year.

The singer received a standing ovation as she dedicated the award, for I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, to “each and every member of Ireland’s refugee community”.

“You’re very welcome in Ireland. I love you very much and I wish you happiness,” she said.

Ms O’Connor is survived by her three children. Her son, Shane, died last year aged 17.

Wow, I'm both surprised she lasted so long and that she died so early. Suicide or OD I wonder.

Edit: She always seemed haunted by something, losing a kid probably just took what was left. :(

I don't think you go to hell just for being a lunatic, but she did get pretty cowish for a while because she didn't get enough credit for Nothing Compares 2 U despite not actually writing it (its a Prince song).

Nah. Pope St. John Paul II was probably praying for her soul and already forgave her, like he did his attempted assassin, even going so far as having a private meeting with him in prison and reconciling. We don't know where her soul is (or anybody else's for that matter, except the Saints who we know are in Heaven). The best we can do is pray for her soul. She had a magnificent voice but clearly a lot of demons. A very tragic cultural figure who I hope found redemption in the end.
