Current Thing pissing me off? The Indianapolis mayor's race.
I know people there and I'm following it on their behalf.
Current mayor Joe Hogsett let the place burn in 2020. His office told the police to stand down at a point when they were keeping it contained, and the city was attacked. Mayor Joe has to this day not explained his actions. Lately he's wanting to do all sorts of things to keep the city safer, like repealing gun laws that he has no jurisdiction over or imposing fines for people carrying guns. We all know murderers hate paying fines!
Running against Joe Hogsett is Jefferson Shreve. His position on gun violence in the city? The exact same thing Joe Hogsett wants to do. Try for laws that are out of range for a mayor and hand out tickets to people with guns, even though Indiana is a concealed carry state.
Criminals aren't going to cancel their plans for a drive-by just because they might get a ticket. You know who might leave the gun at home though?
The good guys with guns who could stop the criminals might not want to go against an ordinance. Think good guys with guns don't exist? Look up Elisjsha Dicken, he stopped a shooter at the Greenwood Park Mall in July 2022.
Both Joe Hogsett and Jefferson Shreve want the criminals to have the upper hand. WHY might the mayor of a fairly large city want criminals to win? Are they perhaps corrupt af and are in the pocket of a crime boss? I have no evidence of that but it would make a lot of the decisions make sense.
If you live in Indianapolis or might move there in the near future, just know that the murder rate is about the same as Chicago once you adjust for population. Then there's the shootings where nobody dies but there are injuries, and the robberies, and carjackings, and all the other lovely things that don't make the headlines.
America scares me. Maybe I'm just getting old. Is this why all the older adults were terrified of everything when I was a kid?
