Turkish military is caliming they;'ve taken control while the official government denies the announcements.

Yildirim says "it would be wrong to call it a coup" but that there has been an attempt by "part of the military".

He describes it as an "illegal attempt" to seize power.

Turkey would never allow any "initiative that would interrupt democracy", he said, and promised the perpetrators "will pay the highest price".

Earlier, military jets were heard flying over the capital, Ankara.

Media reports said ambulances were seen in front of the Turkey's military headquarters.

Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge were both closed on Friday, local television channels reported.

A witness in the country’s capital told Reuters that gunshots were heard as military jets and helicopters were seen flying overhead. Witnesses in Istanbul, Turkey’s biggest city, also spotted helicopters overhead, the agency reported.

Latest updates also claim that internet and communications have been shut down, but it's unclear as to weather the military or government was responsible.

Also, hilariously enough, not even 4 months ago the Turkish Military threatened legal sanctions against those spreading "false rumors" they were planning a coup.

I doubt it's a lack of balls. Mind you, Erdogan has spent the last couple of years bludgeoning every person he accuses of wrongthink into submission or silence. And the fact he wants to establish armed militias to uphold Status Quo (ie: his unchallenged power over Turkey) does make me a bit nervous.

By 2020, Turkey is going to be a theocracy. By 2025, it'll be ruled by Warlords and Erdogan's mangled body will dangle from a lamppost while a shitton of neanderthals fire their AKs into the air.

I think that this marks the end of the Kemalist Deep State in Turkey. The conspiratorial shadow government that had run Turkey for almost a century has been overthrown. I think the overall lesson of this is that the people who really run the world at least have some interest in its continued safety whereas the rebels don't

The state of emergency gives President Erdogan radically enhanced powers for three months.

He and the cabinet will be able to enact laws bypassing parliament; the constitutional court will be unable to challenge them; there could be restrictions on publications and freedom of assembly; and broader powers of arrest.

Yeah, this will totally last for only three months. Either Erdogan will extend the state of emergency or he'll do away with the pretense altogether.

Well turns out it's now "in 10 days". Except we can also add the time since the coup too it, and it almost sounds like he keeps pushing the goalposts away from his own punt attempt, if you catch my meaning.

Or in less autistic terms, the longer Gulen is in the US, the longer the "undesirable elements" can pose a "threat".

Actual legal experts estimate the process itself could, assuming Turkey kept pursuing the issue, take years to resolve even if legitimate. So even if Gulen got deported, he wouldn't be going to Turkey, he'd be going to the Democratic Republic of Edroganstan
