Opinion Why Are Americans So Negative About the Economy?

Almost a year has passed since the Bureau of Economic Analysis announced that the U.S. economy had contracted for two quarters in a row. Some people believe, wrongly, that two quarters of falling G.D.P. is the official definition of a recession. Economic negativity ran rampant, especially but not only on the political right.

The interesting question now is why, at least according to some surveys, the public remains very negative on the economy — as negative as it has been in the past amid severe economic downturns — even though those recession calls were clearly a false alarm, and the economy is actually looking remarkably strong. Or maybe the question should be why people say that they’re very negative on the economy.

This is a touchy subject, albeit one I’ve commented on before. You don’t want to say that Americans are stupid; you certainly don’t want to sound like that John McCain adviser who insisted that America was a “nation of whiners” who were experiencing only a “mental recession.”

On the other hand, there are now huge gaps between what people say about the economy and both what the data says and what they say about their own experience. And we have some new information on what lies behind these gaps.

First, about that much-hyped “Biden recession.” The actual definition of a recession involves several economic indicators, and aside from those G.D.P. numbers, nothing that has happened to the economy looks remotely like a recession.

Since December 2021 the U.S. economy has added almost six million jobs while the unemployment rate has fallen from 3.9 percent to 3.4 percent, a level not seen since the 1960s. And no, unemployment isn’t low because Americans have dropped out of the labor force: The percentage of adults either working or looking for a job has declined, but that’s almost entirely a result of an aging population, and labor force participation is right back in line with prepandemic projections.

And these are good jobs, according to workers themselves. According to the Conference Board, which has been surveying job satisfaction since 1987, “U.S. workers have never been more content.”

To be sure, the return of serious inflation after decades of quiescence rattled everyone, and not just because it reduced real incomes. (Real wages fell during Ronald Reagan’s second term, but people felt pretty good about the economy anyway.) One benefit of low inflation is that it gives people one less thing to worry about; according to the American Psychiatric Association, inflation was a major source of stress during 2022.

But inflation, while still elevated, has come way down. The inflation rate over the past six months was 3.3 percent, compared with 9.6 percent last June. The price of gasoline, a major political talking point last year, is now more or less normal compared with average earnings.

And people have noticed. In October, 20 percent of Americans named inflation as the most important problem facing the nation; that’s now down to 9 percent.

So what’s going on? The general rule seems to be that Americans are feeling good about their personal situation but believe that bad things are happening to other people. A Federal Reserve study found that in late 2021 a record-high percentage of Americans were positive about their own finances while a record low were positive about the economy. We don’t have results for 2022 yet, but my guess is that they’ll look similar.

Partisanship surely explains much of this divergence. A newly published study shows that who holds the White House has huge effects on views of the economy; this is true for supporters of both parties, although the effect appears to be about twice as strong for Republicans. The study also finds, however, that these changes in reported views don’t appear to have any effect on actual spending — that they reflect “cheerleading,” as opposed to “actual expectations.”

Beyond that, there’s good reason to believe that media reports about the economy have had a strongly negative bias. One thing that has gone really, really right in America lately is job creation, yet the public consistently reports having heard more negative than positive news about employment.

And let’s not let economists off the hook. As Mark Zandi of Moody’s Analytics points out, many economists have been predicting recession month after month for the past year. Sooner or later, a recession will no doubt happen, but as he says, “In my 30-plus years as a professional economist, I’ve never seen such recession pessimism,” even as the economy has remained resilient. And this pessimism has surely filtered through to the public.

So where does all this leave us? America hasn’t yet brought inflation back to prepandemic levels, and we may yet have an economic hard landing. But so far, at least, we’ve had a stunningly successful recovery from the Covid shock.

While many Americans tell surveys that things are terrible — which says something about how people respond to surveys and where they get their information — this doesn’t contradict that positive assessment.

Personally I think we should listen to his opinions. The man has the unique ability to be wrong about everything. So when he says buy you sell and when he says the economy is doing great you better start hoarding ammo and canned food and finding a place to hide out during the upcoming collapse.

Buying ammo right now is like buying silver, it's tradeable, and basically everyone on the planet understands what it's worth.

Wow, it's almost like I don't give a shit about this. Whether the unemployment rate is 70% or 4% matters not to me because I have a job all the time.
A 70% unemployment rate would be a nightmarish third-world dystopia where you constantly risk getting shot for your pocket change, I would definitely start caring long before it got that bad.

Clicked to this tab after pre-ordering some classic comfort food - McDonald's wants us to go to the McCrispy instead of the now-overpriced not-a-dollar McChicken. I can afford it easily but it still really irks me that they introduce The Better McWhatever but then up the price on the "you're a cheap shit" item.

Roommate has finally seen the light and is ready to sell this shit shack to flee for whiter pastures. We're gonna wait until after the 2024 election to make any moves - there's nothing where we want to go but overpriced new builds in crap ass subdivisions. So we wait. I've ordered a remote-controlled outdoor high-lumen stadium spotlight to deter (blind) the thumper out back, we'll see if it works. My optimism is guarded.

eta: while on the nostalgia train, one of my first apartments (second, actually) in The Big City was in a high rise downtown with an indoor pool, sauna and exercise room for $550 per month in their subsidized units. I called on a total lark and bingo scored a pad. I can't even afford a room with a shared kitchen or bath for women only now if I wanted to live alone safely - I've done the co-ed rooming houses and never the fuck again.

I hear there's a Jim Cramer investment fund that does alright by doing the opposite of what he advises.

I noticed the price of a quart of chocolate milk has dropped about 20 cents in the last couple months

Other than gas prices, which are always fluctuating, this is the first price decrease on ANY product I have seen in THREE YEARS

A double cheeseburger at your favorite fast food establishment that cost 99 cents 3 years ago costs 2.75 today

I wonder why people think things are shitty

He is an egotist, he likes to be praised so he did something that got him lots of praise.

He ran as a candidate for the people who the GOP has utterly failed for the past Generation and a half.
It really is fucked up someone as egotistical as trump is somehow the more moral of the choices we have in this fucked up world.
It's already begun, as evidenced by the retail giants bugging out from inner cities.
Don't forget the autistic sperging of the people in charge of said inner cities amounting to nothing.
Newsome's impotent screeching used to actually do something. Like get their opposition fucked over cuz MUH DRUMPF. Now look at how far it's fallen. And this is the retard they're trying to groom into presidency as well lmao.

I mean it's a very simple transaction.

Trump saw a want being unfilled, he made a deal with the people who wanted that.

They suck off his Ego he fulfills their need. It's less about Morality vs Immorality, Trump was just very uniquely positioned to be able to fill the needs he does. As much as I like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul they would have been very weak to the Media onslaught that Trump seems largely Immune to.

That's what happens when you let the cheers of the crowd drown out the jeers of the hecklers.

What do you think the odds are of Trump, if he wins, pulling a GWB 2nd term and mostly hiding and wussing out? That would be an unexpected outcome for sure. I still think they're legally going to nail him to the cross at this point though.

I don't think it is likely, after losing in 2020 and the GOPe Rat fucking him like they did this isn't a business transaction now. It's personal now, the Administrative Industrial Complex got between Trump and getting his Ego Blowjob so if he wins again I imagine he is actually going to spend the 4 years after not trying to Drain the swamp..he will want the swamp torched with Napalm and the Land salted.

"Administrative Industrial complex", I like that term, I also like "Bureaucratic Industrial complex" who could fit the description of the "Swamp" as well.

I noticed commodity prices are back close to their pre-pandemic levels, but due to sticky pricing we probably won't see consumer prices returning. Maybe the innawoods fags and their potato farms were onto something...
Well that might be the case in commodity trading but down to the customer level....

THEY are NOT in my region it is WORSE on the important things.

To clarify a bit.

I have stated that a lot of the "cost" was market manipulation by THE RICH. There are the standard patterns that I follow to stay ahead of the game.

Because of the short term profit and short term mindset of GENERATIION FAIL who are now in decision making places in business... as well as being incredibly ignorant on HOW REAL LIFE WORKS... is why we are in this mess right now.

So I'll throw out this bone for you so you get an understanding on how certain things work in this world. Whether you think this is bullshit or not, I really do not care. I've made it the 1% wealth bracket with my beliefs and methods of gaining wealth. The comments below are blunt nuggets of info to gain and some of my beliefs on why the shit is so bad so far.

Whenever there is some sort of interruption in commodities... there will be those that will rape your silly ass... to the point that it bleeds money out of you...

Example. Lets go with The Egg Crisis... I've heard the excuses of why eggs shot up in price but like anything eggs are a commodity. From producers, to the middle men ,to the grocery stores, then to the CONSUUUUUMERS...

When there is any small hiccup in the "cough cough" supply chain there will be those that will take advantage of the situation and drive up the prices to stupid levels and keep them there...

UNTIL THE CONSUUMERS gets tired of the ASS RAPING and start whining as the bitches as they are... then the rumblings of government will start because you know they have to keep the dumb asses complacent... Just as soon as a politician start to take a look at the situation, WELL GOLLY GEE.. THE PRICES STOPPED GOING UP. And several weeks later the prices started to go down.

Yes I know there was problems in the chicken industry, BUT I fucking know when I can go across the border and get A DOZEN EGGS FOR $2.79 OR BETTER YET SMALL INDPENDENT EGG FAMERS SELLING EGGS $4 TO 5 DOLLARS A DOZEN. WHEN THE PRICE OF EGGS WERE HITTING CLOSE FO 9 DOLLARS A DOZEN... YOU KNOW THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG.

Another example is CHEAP CHINESEIUM OSB PLYWOOD. There is no fucking reason why that shit AND EVERYTHING ELSE. shot up to 5+ times the normal cost. BULLSHIT.

Its because of the supply chain and the coof.... and the tariff that the fucking cunt liberals will say are the reasons.

So you are going to tell me that GEORGIA PACIFIC... A US company... that is not effective by the tariffs is going to sell me a 3/4 sheet of treated plywood FOR CLOSE TO 130 DOLLARS.... AND HIGHER??!!!

"WHY YES WE ARE BECAUSE GENERATION FAIL ARE AS SMART AS ROCKS".

And that is exactly what they did. I can understand if the cheap ass 7/16 inch OSB plywood is 2 to 3 times the price... or from 26 to 39 dollars per sheet back then taking all of the bullshit that LIBERALS AND BUSINESS was claiming to be what was going on BUT AT $70+ DOLLARS A FUCKING SHEET??? FUCK YOU ASSHOLES!!!

Ass raping 101 is in force. The biggest transfer of wealth to the Super Rich in the history of mankind has taken and continue to place.

And the Liberal Dumb Fucks are the reasons that it happened.
1. You closed down the country and weaponized an illness for political gain.
2. You printed money which caused the weakening of the dollar meaning the dollar is worth less.

3 Because of the weakening dollar that helped to cause rampart inflation that is still not undercontrol
4. Because of the weakening dollar it help increase the cost of the basic needs of life for survival.
5. You shut down big energy which drove the prices of energy because of socialistic ideology.
6. You split an entire country and made it US vs THEM and then start shoving extremist viewpoints, such as Critical Race Theory, White Man Bad (I'm not even white and this is an ass move) and racial ideological favoritism. This has a indirect effect but an effect of our economy.

You had a chance to change things in mid terms 2022 but with certainty you liberal fucks just love getting your ass raped so in you case I hope you bleed more money, because you deserve it.

Now I can say that some things on retail has gone down such as eggs at $3.50 a carton, but not at last years levels and certainly not at 2020.

What I can say in my region is...
Gas is 70% higher than it was before 2021
The cost of fast food is 50% to 70% more before 2021.
Utility bills are 50% more than in 2021.
The cheap ass bread as well as the majority of named brand products sold at Wally World is 30 to 60% more than in 2021.

(NOTE: Remember why I stated when I built my food pantry and save over 60 grand in 3 years because I stopped eating out? What did you think I did with that money? I invested it. That many as well as all of my long term financial investments made me rich enough to reach that final wealth bracket... the 1%. in March 2022.

As stated before to make money is to save money and then invest it wisely).

Nothing has gone down to what the BIDEN INFLATION NUMBERS dictate. NOTHING...

Your buying power is 30% less (or more) than it was in 2020.

But as I love to say you ASSHOLES... WHO VOTED FOR BIDEN...

YOU VOTED FOR THIS... YOU DESERVE THIS...

And so on and so on... You made this mess. This mess will never go away... So might as well either use whatever brain matter that you have left to broaden your horizons..

Or just prepare yourself to ass raped to oblivion for being as complacent as the woke sheeple that are...

Note: This is one of the reasons at this moment you will not see me up here often for a while. Things have gone sideways for me. Not in a bad way but things are taking up more time to do and I am making moves to make money off of idiots.

Like anything in life, when you see an opportunity to royally fuck someone in the ass... you take a nice sharp pointy stick and do the "Vlad Impaler" on the masses...

I plan to do so. An opportunity came up and even with being retired, you never really are retired. If you want to stay ahead in life. There is no such thing as riding into the sunset when you get old. You must fight for everything that you have until the end. This includes how you want to end your days. I want and will end mine comfortability but now with a little pizazz in the end. I will certainly die with my boots on.

There is money to be made in my fields of expertise. When I get a breather from "Vladding" I'll return here to be the same old crazy old man who imparts wisdom from the ancients on how not to be a complete fuck up in life. So with that The Red Chair leave with a parting quote from a famous dude - Myamoto Musashi

To Win Any Battle...
You Must Fight As If...
You Are Already Dead...

And I'm already Dead so to speak... so cya all you rat bastards from here. I'll come back in from time to time, but for now not all of the time like I used to.

It's fucked when fast food is as expensive as a restaurant.

I remember when 15 dollars could net you a good sit-down meal with drink and tip. 20 dollars would have netted you a meal at a gourmet restaurant, and 30 dollars would get you a meal at a steakhouse or nice sushi place. Now you need 15 dollars to eat at the fast food joint, 20 dollars for the mid-level sit down restaurant, and 50 dollars for any restaurant above that tier. I do more cooking for myself, but there's only so many variants of "chicken and rice" "meat and pasta" or "sandwich/ burger" that you can eat before you want to burn your kitchen to the ground.

Why won't you fucking plebs just listen to us and stop using your eyes and ears - the article.

Keep coping DNC and globalist. You guys aren't the masters of the universe. People can see behind the curtain. Et. al etc. etc.

Following up on what @Kheapathic and @CuzinEd said, Real wages haven't budged since 1980 or so.

Silence is Violence
War is Peace
Slavery is Freedom Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Strength

We've always been at war with Eurasia Russia.

What else is there? Capitalism is the best we got. I think actually applying the law to people higher up is a start. Stop giving CEOs who do white collar crimes Club fed.
I would probably say that nationalist economics or economic nationalism would be a good choice. This is what Trump and Bannon talked about. That or get some people together that are more educated in economics and finance and come up with a new system. It's not going to come from randoms on the internet. But trying to get rid of corrupt systems isn't easy.

If you keep capitalism around it will have to be highly regulated and reigned in. They don't like that though and will fight tooth and nail and they have the money and power.
I don't wanna say "real capitalism has never been tried", or split hairs, but is this really a failure of capitalism? How are we defining "capitalism", for one thing? It's an incredibly broad term, and exists in many different forms.

I wouldn't exactly call what we have free enterprise. It's more like Corporate Socialism, in which Big Business gets the lion's share of gibsmedats in exchange for acting as unofficial arms of the government.

Like @tehpope said, the solution isn't to throw the baby out with the bathwater, but to ensure that free enterprise has rules that apply to everyone.
yes, this is capitalism failing. It's failing pretty hard. Capitalism basically means rich people get to do whatever they want to make money. Whatever they told you capitalism means is a bunch of lies. Probably propaganda. What you are seeing now is capitalism. This is what capitalism is. When capitalism is allowed to go unchecked this is what it becomes. That's what capitalists want. To be able to do whatever they want. Like send jobs overseas or import foreign labor legally and illegally. They will do anything to make money even if it means destroying the country which is what they have done.

People across Eastern Europe are saying the same thing. But they lived under communism so they have a little extra to add. Yes communism was bad but so is capitalism. These are people that lived under communism. They know capitalism has failed them. They saw communism fail. To say that capitalism isn't working isn't entirely accurate. It's working for a small minority of people it's just not working for the majority.

If something isn't done or a solution isn't found there will be a solution to the failure of capitalism it just might turn out be something that isn't much better. Certain people and groups will use capitalism failing to try and push for communism or socialism. The US seems to be slowly sliding towards European style socialism which is like a mix of capitalism and socialism. Just our social benefits system is worse because we spend so much on military. Europe never did this. They sat over there in Europe and played socialism while counting on the US to defend them.

Like I said in another response, if capitalism is kept around it will have to be regulated as much as possible and it will have to be reigned in. Like I said capitalists don't want this and they have all the money and power. I imagine they will just do what they have always done is keep doing what they are doing till they run the country into the ground. Then once enough people are in poverty they will be screaming for communism or socialism. Remember, communism breeds in poverty.
