He accused Graves of the fireflies of being pro-fascist propaganda because of the film about the suffering of Japanese civilians during WW2.
It's been ages since I saw that review so I don't remember the pro-fascism argument, but him saying it's emotionally-manipulative propaganda in general (least in calling out the ungrateful rebellious youth of Japan at the time) was something that was a rather interesting take that I still think back on from time to time. Dunno if he's had a change in heart towards the movie after visiting Hiroshima, though, don't recall him bringing up Grave of the Fireflies in his Barefoot Gen review.

At this point, I just use him as a checklist for older anime to watch before checking out the review. It's just hard to find good-quality anime reviewers, especially those who don't go on about the "male gaze" and shit like that.

It's sorta a shame Bennet has gone so far downhill... I haven't watched him in years, but I remember he used to be a good source for reviews of older anime, although he rarely did anything I hadn't already seen, so I mostly just watched him for amusement. Still, I remember him being one of the better anime reviewers at the time.

It got to the point that I only trust and watch Mexican anime reviewers on YouTube. Even though they mostly just talk about Dragon Ball Z. If you speak Spanish, Spanish-speaking anime reviewers seem decent so far.
but I remember he used to be a good source for reviews of older anime
It’s all downhill for him when he refused to do a review on violence Jack in the name of virtue singling. Yet he praised Elfen lied which had similar themes because it had a female main character. That makes Elfen Lied rape and gore okay in his eyes.

HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU GET THAT FROM GRAVE IN THE FIRE FLIES???????

Also I agree, he is one of the worst Anitubers, and that's saying something as there is barely any good ones. He sucked at game reviews, and now he is a shit anime reviewer.

Bennete the sage deserves more hate online. Not only is he pro anime censorship and demands Japan adopt a woke western world view, like ending fan service and intentionally making female characters ugly. His white man must have saved people of color by getting offended on behalf of them getting old fast. He is the most idiotic anime reviewer I have seen. He accused Graves of the fireflies of being pro-fascist propaganda because of the film about the suffering of Japanese civilians during WW2. Also fuck him for calling tequila Gundam racist despite Mexicans loving G Gundam.
It's Speedy Gonzales but anima. A white liberal thinks Mexican theme characters are racist when Mexicans and other Hispanics absolutely love said character. Serously fuck white liberals!!

Can you believe people got upset from having nuclear bombs dropped on their country during a world war and had to watch their families slowly die?

That's nothing compared to today's REAL problems, like women looking too attractive, minorities not being portrayed as perfect flawless individuals, improper pronoun usage online, and that darn dirty capitalism allowing people to choose what they want to do with their lives.

Wait he seriously called that Fascist propaganda! I never heard of this anima before but if that's the plot of it. Than your a real jackass for missing the point it sounds like.

... Never heard of Grave of the Fireflies? It's one of the least-obscure anime ever. It's also depressing as hell, and while it's good, I wouldn't really suggest it if you want to have a good rest of your day.

It's so good, but a caution is to not watch it while in a bad mood

I have only watched a few anima to be honest.

I mean, that's totally fair. It's just that Grave of the Fireflies is one of the few anime (at least until the Pokermans and stuff) that actually had some level of wider cultural recognition, about on par with a Ghibli release or Akira. I'm not expecting you to have seen it... Hell, I'm not even sure I would suggest you should, like I say, it's depressing as all hell. But I am a little surprised at someone not being aware of it.

Looking it up some more. The art looks familiar to me. I might have heard of it but just didn't pay attention what it was about.

The anime is great. I still think the manga was way better and it could've worked more as a TV series than an actual 90-minute movie.

Akira was a great 20 minute movie, then it got really fucking weird, then it got really fucking stupid. I'll admit, my brain kinda mentally started playing with the cellphone that wouldn't be invented for a couple decades when the blue senior citizen children showed up.

I've never actually read the manga. I was so put off by the movie.

I know, heresy. I was so let down by the movie.

The visuals are what made up the movie for its very stupid, very nonsensical story, which *ahem*

insists upon itself.

But yea, I recommend the manga as the storyline makes way more sense and would've fit better in TV format.

As much as I love anime, to the point I'm more or less a closet weeb... I feel like this describes an awful lot of anime. Great visuals, very stupid storyline. Bonus points if it's somehow about man either becoming, inventing, or killing God. Extra bonus points if it's two or more of those.

I don't remember him saying it's fascist propaganda, but he was assblasted from a boomer daring to say journos can't just make up what a film says without actually looking at the historical background. It's like people misunderstanding Romeo and Juliet.

I haven't watched Grave of the Fireflies, so I'm not adressing that directly, but it really annoys me when people reduce Japans role in WW2 to having lost two cities to bombs. Post war Japan has run a deliberate, and very successful, campaign to paint itself as a victim of WW2, which is obscene.
They invaded Korea decades earlier, held it til 45, invaded China in the 30s, raped Nanking in 37 and first striked the US in 41. They ran rape camps, tested chemical weapons on civilians, froze people to death, poisened cities drinking water, ran killing contests, mass executed prisoners of war, starved and worked them to death.
The likely death toll of japanese war crimes starts at 3 million and runs in the double digits. That's "war crime deaths", not total deaths. They took millions of chinese prisoners of war and released 56(!!!) at the end.
So yeah, fuck WW 2 Japan, you could have dropped a nuke on all their cities and it wouldn't amount to half the damage they did elsewhere.
