Turkish military is caliming they;'ve taken control while the official government denies the announcements.

Telegraph live feed dijo:
Yildirim says "it would be wrong to call it a coup" but that there has been an attempt by "part of the military".

He describes it as an "illegal attempt" to seize power.

Turkey would never allow any "initiative that would interrupt democracy", he said, and promised the perpetrators "will pay the highest price".

The Telegraph dijo:
Earlier, military jets were heard flying over the capital, Ankara.

Media reports said ambulances were seen in front of the Turkey's military headquarters.

Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge were both closed on Friday, local television channels reported.

The Guardian dijo:
A witness in the country’s capital told Reuters that gunshots were heard as military jets and helicopters were seen flying overhead. Witnesses in Istanbul, Turkey’s biggest city, also spotted helicopters overhead, the agency reported.

Latest updates also claim that internet and communications have been shut down, but it's unclear as to weather the military or government was responsible.

Also, hilariously enough, not even 4 months ago the Turkish Military threatened legal sanctions against those spreading "false rumors" they were planning a coup.

I'm actually the most surprised that Putin hasn't said "enough is enough" and stepped in since Turkey is right on his doorstep. One would think the last thing he would want is an Islamic state right next to Russia.

You do realise that Turkey is a member of NATO, right? And that the US has several airbases and nukes stationed there? Notwithstanding that even Russia can't invade another country just due to islamic content. Chechnya, Georgia and Crimea were possible due to calculated obfuscation, propaganda, denialism and weak international response. Wouldn't be so with Turkey.

But this is off-topic.

Such a move would likely become..."problematic" for the Russians fairly quickly given that Article V of the North Atlantic Treaty would allow Turkey to declare such an attack one made against NATO as a whole.

Further, Erdogan has already thought about declaring just that...

It's to Putin's own interest that Turkey stays unstable and restless. If the Turkish people remain preoccupied with their own internal drama, then they're much less unlikely to pick a fight against Russia. On the downside it does mean that a pure stream of liquid heroin is flowing unchecked through a corrupt Turkey and across the border into Russia, but you can't have everything. In general, Turkey doesn't really have much that Russia wants. Russia did annex Crimea in 2014 during the Ukrainian Civil War, but then Crimea is prime real estate.

The Turkish PM has been making statements regarding the coup. According to him (as reliable as government sources are) the situation is firmly under control and a few thousand soldiers from all ranks have been detained.

On a scary note, the top trending hashtag in Turkey at the moment translates as #BringbacktheDeathPenalty.

Yeah, that's right, ordinary people want the organisers of the coup to be killed. And the Turkish government is considering this. Get out the Russian Vodka and sing the national anthem because I smell a purge coming!

Holy shit has Turkey officially gone downhill since the time I visited in Spring 2015.
I actually enjoyed my time there.
#ErdoganMustResign

And there it goes, Turkey's last chance to get rid of Erdogan before he destroys everything that Atatürk has set up. It's just a matter of time until something similar happens again, but still, this is giving Erdogan enough legitimization to severely shit on anything even remotely resembling a modern, secular Turkey.

And the turkish people cheer him on, while he plunges them back into the dark ages.

Russia is only capable of intervening in weak, quasi-failed countries such as Ukraine or Syria. In Turkey, it would be shown its place very quickly - even if it attempted hybrid warfare like in Ukraine.

A helicopter has landed in Greece and eight Turkish pro-coup soldiers have come out of it, seeking asylum in Greece.

Meanwhile, the Turkish government has demanded that Greece hand the soldiers over.

Erdogan has also accused an cleric by the name of Fetullah Gulen, apparently a man living in self imposed exile in the US who has been called the 'second most powerful man in Turkey,' of being the man behind the coup. He also says that any country that sides with Gulen will be 'considered at war with Turkey.'

Why the fuck don't we sanction this country already?

This whole thing is over and done with ridiculously fast and easy. The soldiers who were closest to the seats of power surrendered first, when it's almost always the fanatics and true believers who're out in front, bravely sacrificing their lives for the sake of their country and glorious new regime. It was either a last ditch attempt against Yildrim by what was left of the secular sections of the army, or some kind of setup. It reeks. "Tha gubment set it up" cliched conspiracy theory isn't all that unlikely. It could very well have been instigated by one of Yildrim's moles, to flush out the dissenters in the ranks.

Not necessarily. Russia has a population of 147 million, Turkey has 80. All Russia really has to do is to start marching across the border en masse.

Let's just say, Turkey managed to shoot down a russian bomber without much of a problem despite its manifold automated anti-missile systems.
Sure, the pilot most likely didn't expect to be shot at, so he was a pretty open target, but still...

Anti missile system?
Lol dude, it only warns against a active radar lock and modern infrared missiles can't be fooled by flares anymore.
It could be a b-2 bomber, would still be shot down if the a Turkish interceptor fires infrared missiles at it.

Meanwhile, in even shittier parts of the world, our good friends Hamas have been celebrating the coup being defeated. They described it as a 'vicious' plot to overthrow Erdogan.

Well, you know that a government is shit when HAMAS backs it.

Roaches want Erdoroach.
I say we let the anti-Erdoroach soldiers in Europe and exchange them for rapefugees.

Nope. The Su-24 is equipped with instruments to warn of a radar lock, but it also has an automatic Missile Approach Warning System (namely the "Asowsky L-082 MAK-UL") that looks for heat signatures.

It's right in the 3rd paragraph a bit under the image of an airborne Su-24 with its landing gear deployed.

Dude, the jets were in close proximity, there is no chance of a miss.
Although this is interesting.

Yeah, as I said, the russian pilot was pretty much the perfect target, flying at a high altitude not expecting an attack, if he had considered that turkish F-16 a threat, he most likely would have hauled ass at a much lower altitude and not have allowed the turkish pilot to come so close.

Yeah, although it was a huge mistake to the Russian to not escort their planes.
