I'm not crazy about this. Not because of any issues relating to gender, but because it makes me uncomfortable that we still have to register for the draft in 2016 (even though no one has actually been drafted since the 1970s). What do you guys think?

Equality isn't one sided. You want all the goodies guys get you have to take the good with the bad.

I have similar feelings. If there is a draft at all women should have to register for it, but I am concerned that they are expanding the draft right now.

Selective service is literally a half a page form that you fill out at the local DMV office and never see again for the rest of your life. In some states, they even have selective service form on one side of the sheet and voter registration form on the other side so you can do both while you're in line at the DMV. And short of WWIII, there's no chance the US will call up a draft, and in that case, everybody's fucked anyway.

The last time I even heard about Selective Service in the news was around the time of the Iraq War, when an anti-war congressman tried to reinstate it to discourage support for the war. Short of WWIII I can't imagine a situation were Congress would seriously consider reinstating it.

From one of the articles:

Currently, U.S. law requires most male citizens and immigrants between the ages of 18 to 25 to register in the selective service system. The Senate NDAA would require all female citizens and U.S. residents who turn 18 on or after Jan. 1, 2018, to register as well.

So does this mean that any woman who turned 18 before January 1, 2018 wouldn't have to register?

The draft is a bygone product of an age when the government could safely assume a good portion of it's populace, selected at random, could walk a mile without getting winded.

Nobody HAS to sign up for selective service. But if you don't register, you can't qualify for welfare/unemployment benefits, medicare, medicaid, social security payments, student loans from the federal government, or get a government job among other things.

An archaic invention that will never be used ever made equalist? I don't see a draft happening any time soon.

Forcing women to sign up for the draft is the best way of making it eventually dissapear. Society won't stand for precious females being forced to undergo such fascist, militaristic, obsolete opression. And thus falls yet another of the pillars of the western social contract, since it may inconvenience people with a vagina, all other factors be damned. Almost as if there's a pattern there. Also unsurprised at the number of people unironically calling it archaic and obsolete. Yeah, cause that's never happened before, people so fucking sure that war was never, ever going to happen again. It's just going to be eternal peace forever, anything else would be ridiculous. That's some Neville Chamberlain level of naivety.

mmm, if this passes there will be salt my friends

passing this will be a big step towards getting rid of it

Lol it's obsolete because in the event of another World War it won't matter how many bodies you bring to the fight, because the world will be too busy being lit by a thousand atomic explosions.

lol, the most pandered to, coddled and cosseted group, western women, must register for the draft in the US.
Watch them scramble to abolish this evil tool of the patriarchy now that it suddenly affects them

Yup, just like people post WW1 thought technology had achieved such a state that Total War was just prohibitively impossible and would never happen again because it would mean utter annihilation (i.e hoped). Keep thinking MAD is gonna last forever, nuclear weapons and ICBM's are literally the end-all of human ingenuity and will never be countered in any way. Sure, Star Wars may have been a retarded pipe dream, but I think people don't realize the exponential nature of technological progress we've been in since Industrialization, and it's not showing signs of stopping anytime soon.

Do you beleive that the draft expansion is due to the government expecting a major armed conflict?
