he was looking for pistols or maybe a shotgun - something under $200. i didn't really have anything like that and advised him of some local stores i knew and to try and look for a used deal on calguns (a forum). he said okay, looked around some more for the next 10 minutes took a couple pictures of interesting guns on display, and left

he asked what was popular and cheap to use for self defense. he didn't seem keen on either the Gold Dots or HSTs i offered at $28 a box. it seemed he liked 9mm though, but wasn't on the take when i asked if he had already tried 9mm and preferred it because i had some LEO trade in pistols for sale as well but they were in .40 S&W. apparently a $389 Glock was beyond his budget, as he was pretty adamant about staying at or under $200.

he didn't seem to know much about rifles besides what is shown in media or games though, and honestly he quoted some ad-copy at me almost verbatim from both Kel-Tec and SCCY. his friend with him said he could save up in a week and come back with his sister's money (sis-bucks he said). so there's that.

depends on the Glock model. most people encounter are 17, 15, or 13 cartridges:

17 is the global 9mm average for the Glock 17 in over 50 countries.
15 is in the popular Glock 19 compact 9mm model, which is also extremely popular with both LEA and regular guys, and lots of women too thanks to an overall shorter pistol frame.
13 is the standard for the Glock 23 .40 S&W model, which is a very popular US LEO pistol, carried by a few hundred agencies throughout the US and Canada.

backup guns are all over the place though, and are usually 10 or 12 rounds depending.

Yeah good luck with finding a pistol at that price point Phil. At best, he might be able to buy a Hi-Point, which are... not the greatest of guns.

they aren't, no, but they can take a beating, have one of the best product warranties in the US firearms market, and are very simple to use and care for. not to mention very cheap. they also are heavy, ugly, have magazine issues, and are plagued with odd manufacturing mistakes not usually seen on nicer brands.

a $200 shotgun isn't out of the question though, a used Maverick 88 or a break action would likely be under $200. also if he is saving up a bit, a PF-9 or used S&W 5906 are about $350 or less.

i'm not sure how he would qualify to by a handgun though, even a shotgun might be a little onerous on the paperwork unless he flat out lies or the CADOJ misses things like involuntary commitments. likewise i'm not entirely sure who would sell to him. he wasn't all that collected and had enough shiftiness that i wouldn't be comfortable with selling him something without crossing t's and dotting i's. few dealers would want either the bad publicity or the CADOJ or BATFE breathing on them too hard for selling to something that's sketchy or they get a bad feeling about. Phil came off like a nervous punk (as in punk scene, i doubt he'd survive a pit or a Circle Jerk concert after 7pm) with his dress, but lacked the attitude or the obvious interest.

if trying to buy a gun private party - not through a dealer, well in CA all gun transfers barring a select few, are mandatory dealer transfers. and PPT types aren't fond of dealing with people that might catch them a felony.

Do we really want phil having a shotgun though, being the spaz he is? I'd be worried about him having a kitchen knife around let alone a scattergun. He'd probably just hurt himself (or others)

Do you think Phil would go for a shotgun though? Its not very concealable. Its not like he has a home he could keep the shotgun in, and as thick as Spuds is, I imagine even he understands he won't get very far in the world wandering around as a goth potatoman in a women's clothing with a bunch of anti-establishment tattoos all over his body wearing communist beret AND having a shotgun strapped across his back. That's pretty much a "shoot first, ask questions later" scenario for any police officer.

well, to encompass all possibilities, AOW's like the Serbu Super Shorty are CA legal, although NFA controlled. shotguns are inexpensive and beginner friendly on top of being versatile and generally effective. i wouldn't put it outside the realm of possibility. given what i've read of Phil, he's likely either going to nut up and get a cheap surplus handgun like a P-64 and a box of import steel cased ammo and call it a Makarov, or he'll just post about some guns before losing interest and be vague and worthless on Facebook more.

then he might or might not get a gun in CA simply because that will cause a Hold from the CADOJ usually for verification of their status of 5151 and the outcome will determine what the evaluation said.

which is separate from the CADOJ CPSC and is part of the CWICC - however if after the 5150 and 5151 (and as it's defined in 8103) he wasn't admitted to a facility involuntarily, then he falls out of 8103 (and 5150) status and becomes gun-eligible again as much as we may not like that. because he was professionally evaluated and found not to be a danger to self or others.

to wit: if he wasn't committed, the CADOJ will verify this and notify the dealer prior to releasing whatever firearm he was buying.

Heh, I think he meant "cis bucks." It's a weird term Phil uses for his SSDI income since it's paid for primarily through the taxes of cis (meaning non-transgender) people. He takes great pride in being a parasite of the state.

i see - well it wasn't Phil saying it, it was his friend there the first time he came around when he whined about needing to stay at or under $200. if i were a betting man, that $200 was in his pocket hence the requirement. it puts it into a slightly different light but spending SSDI on a firearm is permitted if that's where he's getting his money (usually the 3rd of the month), spending EBT/TANF is not - in CA it's a misdemeanor that could get state benefits re-evaluated or cut entirely. same for liquor, or cigarettes. you mostly see SNAP coupons being traded for that rather than buying those items with EBT/TANF.

i have a few customers, mostly elderly folk in fixed rent places, that sometimes buy ammo on EBT.

he had some letter and small symbols on his knuckles/hands and some block letters under one arm along with a couple visible piercings and some colored tattoos on both arms. didn't see anything otherwise. none were offensive, but mostly confusing - i know a bit of Spanish and it was high school level butchery or bad grammar on a couple. he had a colorful recent (it was reddish, maybe a touch up?) one on the outside of the left wrist that had a triangular pattern and a bicycle of all things. that was the hand supporting his tote bag and was most visible.

as for any batons or whatever he didn't have any visible and i keep a specific eye out for that and ask customers to leave them outside.

There was a post a couple of weeks back at the beginning of his current firearm shopping. Where we posts a pic of a handgun (I think it was the kel-tec post) with a caption of "i held one of these in my hand"
It struck me as -- well that he finds firearms such mysterious totems that somehow their power-magik can be imbued onto a person by touching it.
Sure, I don't think it's all that unusual for people who have initial exposure to firearms later in life to have an initial experience of the machine having power. and it's not totally inaccurate for something that generates explosions in your hand. But I think for sane individuals that comes as much from the concern of accidentally hurting someone as anything...the machine has power and they don't know how to use it yet.
But with Phil, given his posts like, "Izzy's got a gun, kiwi farmers better run" Phil's not thinking along those lines. Phil wants to possess the boom magik...in fantasy
