Trust me, I hate memes being plugged for no good reason in these modern shows too. But I was just pointing out that this isn't new. This was being used back in the 90s but just with different entertainment mediums. So it's hypocritical to say that "omg memes are destroying cartoons today" when pop culture references were being used in the past as well.

You can literally say the same thing about any cartoon trying to incorporate pop culture into their writing, especially shit like Family Guy, The Simpsons, Futurama, etc. And who cares if its from the Internet or not? Past cartoons tried to be relevant to modern times as well, just using different mediums. Billy and Mandy's Chicken Ball Z and Hokeymonsters episodes were a response to people watching Toonami and the popularity with DBZ and Pokemon. Do you think the writers in that instance were trying too hard? Or do you think it's maybe you just find the references cringy because you're used to the Internet's stupidity?
Aren't those shows usually parodying pop culture instead of just referencing it? Not saying you're wrong but I think there are a different ways to go about it, shows like Futurama don't take themselves seriously and it works for them, but when shows try to reference all of the memes without really adding anything and it feels forced. A show can reference a meme or two, that's all fine and dandy, but sometimes it just doesn't work. It doesn't really matter much, it's just a cartoon and I'm sure none of us here fit into the demographic, but since the original show was part of so many of our childhoods we'll whine for a little bit, nitpick, and ultimately we'll go about our day and forget about it.

And you can say it about Gen Zed. And this reboot. Don't you see a difference between doing something well and doing it completely incompetently?

They're trying to make fun of popular culture. The new PPG is using memes because they want to seem down with the kids.

Oh, and regarding the animation; the old show was done in Korea on cels. This one isn't.

The Professor's stubble grew down to his chest... these people can't draw worth crap...

Or in other words:

And that is really just the thing. If you decide to do a reference to something popculture related, you have always to consider how it looks in context of what you make. E.g. : The mayor jumping over barrels a giant monkey throws at him when he tries to save the sleep depraved PPGs (who are like that because of too much videogaming)? Works as a reference to Donkey Kong because it is rather short and "fitting" for the kind of mindset the girls are in at the moment. Bubbles shouting "No Me Gusta" and making a face that breaks the animation style? Just too random as that people, even those who get it, would consider it a funny joke. And the sad thing is, past PPGs could do popculture references quite well. After all, they once referenced the Big Lebowski.

I can accept all your points. I still think it's a nitpick to say a show sucks because the references are shit, but hey I've watched a few episodes and the writing flat out sucks in general so I probably should stop playing devil's advocate, lol.

In terms of the animation aspect, I find it such a shame that they don't take a chance and bring back the Hanna-Barbera style. I mean if you look at the Powerpuff Girls, Professor, and Mayor they look okay in terms of design, but the background characters look like Adventure Time rejects and thus they appear to not belong there. It's really strange.

This episode had another major issue...

Buttercup saying Blossom’s line.

When Uncle Grandpa's animation is more consistent you know you fucked up.

Honestly, my main gripe with the reboot is that they've forgotten PPG wasn't JUST for kids, or even little girls. In fact, it started out as a project called "Whoopass Stew!" and they were called The Whoopass Girls. Even after it was retooled into The Powerpuff Girls, it still had some adult jokes that made it past the censors.

They're trying way too hard to pander to kids and to the Tumblr crowd. It's a flaw in several cartoons today. They try to appeal to kids without understanding how to. Some of the best cartoons never relied on this, which is part of why they were so good.

PPG actually (from what I know) started out as a pisstake of the magical girl genre. A genre which people now whine about because of the "lack" of POC/trans/disabled/etc magical girls.

They're trying to appeal to people who love everything else on CN. They're basically going, "Our new show looks like all our other shows that you enjoy! Please watch us!"

I can agree on the nitpick aspect you mention. Thing is, my problem with the show so far was never primarily with the memes. In fact, when I heard that the Me Gusta thing was what made the internet rage the most, my reaction was a dumbfounded "seriously?". But the other stuff (like most characters looking like rejects for Adventure Time and Clarence, Bubble's VA sucking, the writing somewhere between mediocre and mind numbling boring etc) is still the main issue, so at the end of the day, it still sucks. Not to the degree I would go Mr. Enter on this show (TTG is still worse) but at least to the point I say that I hope tis failed experiment eventually just disappears

With so much advanced digital technology, you'd think people would want to experiment with "retro" animation styles. But apparently cookie cutter Tumblr-esque design schemes are all this SJW writers can come up with.

What I loved about the original PPG was that even though it clearly had some sort of 50s-60s element to it (just look at their house and the Professor's design), it still felt very fresh and original. I also miss the talking dog that was also a big character in Samurai Jack. :(

The original show took design senses out of UPA cartoons and Tatsunoko-type anime and took those influences to make something new.

This show is made by people who have no creative spark, so obviously they'll just rehash what everyone else is doing.

To me it really looks like Youtube Animation, like a fan's interpretation of the Powerpuff Girls. It doesn't look like it was done by professionals by any means.

Oh well, at least the OP was cool.

That's about as worse as the shit I was watching back in the 80's (Muppet Babies always had this problem in the AKOM-produced episodes). You'd think they could fix that easily in the digital age.

That's certainly true. The show made me think it was UPA-meets-Anime the way they went about it. Often I kept confusing Prof. Utonium as Dave Seville (from "The Alvin Show", a rare classic that should be dug out of the vault more often) the way he was designed. The people behind this series came out of that era at CalArts when that sort of "RetroKitsche" look was in, and it was apparent in shows like PPG's or Dexter's Lab.

This show is made by people who have no creative spark, so obviously they'll just rehash what everyone else is doing.
True. Adventure Time it's not!

Usually that's where the money goes (the opening always tends to be the best use of that budget).

At this point, I'm tempted to say that they're either making these fuck ups as a farce, or they genuinely have no idea how a cartoon even works.

That was what I liked about the original series- the art style was unique and visually pleasing without looking too cheap. Add to that some good writing and decent fight animation and it's a show that has (rightfully) stood the test of time.

It's a shame that this show's production values are going further and further down the toilet with every passing minute in each episode. Fuck, I'd argue that Regular Show, a series which I think has an ugly art style and Steven Universe (which also takes cues from the SJW culture) look much better than this series.
