Christmas is the Worst Holiday

I would say your perception of Christmas changes the older you get. As a kid, you're used to getting almost anything you asked for. Typically, toys and games. Eventually, you would be the one to giving gifts as well as receiving. Even more, you'd ask for stuff you'd NEED instead of want.

Example: I was so excited to get multiple pair of socks and winter clothes for Christmas during college.

I find nothing to hate about it, really.

I can tune out the Mariah Carey if need be.

I get 2 paid weeks off.

I'm with normie family members enjoying good food without having to hear from you looney toons about how the Jews are plotting to kill me and shit on my couch. They talk about pleasant things.

A to the Men.

Christmas stopped sucking when I started attending mass on Christmas Eve. It's literally the only thing I look forward to anymore because proper religious Christmas music blows Mariah Carey out of the water. If you develop an appreciation for Christmas hymns, the more decidedly secular stuff you hear on the radio this time of year feels uncomfortably plastic at best and unlistenable at worst.

My point to all of this is that Christmas when you're an adult is ultimately what you make of it. If you can find one good thing to look forward to each year, it stops being a real slog to get through.

Lol at the religious Christmas shills
Christmas was always a pagan Winter festival at its core and even after being Christianized it was 99% about feasting, getting drunk, and terrorizing rich people.
Then around the mid-1800s New York Yankees fagged it up turning it into a family holiday, but the Jesus birthday aspect still played second-fiddle to the Winter theme. And it has had lasting appeal because the Santa lore and all the other adjacent stuff and aesthetic is more interesting and fun.

Santa Clause > Manger

I assume this probably IS something single adults do, but I've been reading about the history of Christmas ("The Battle for Christmas" by Neisenbaum), and I like the way it used to be, basically, Winter Mardi Gras/Carnival.

I think the holiday may have become overly insular, overly focused on the presents and the tree and all of that. I assume people do carol in some places, but I've never actually seen carolers. I think it would be fun if it was common for people to carol, wassail, hold open house, all that.

This is a good way of looking at it. I love Christmas, but I've always had good memories of the holiday. I imagine it's not as pleasant to some people.

That's very true. Someone very close to me, and a very devout Baptist at that, lost her husband to covid two days after Christmas last year. I do wonder how Christmas is colored for people who experience loss like that so close to holiday, and perhaps I'll know soon enough when I visit home at the end of the month.

Every holiday sucks, but Christmas is just the worst.

If you're creaming your pants about santa and presents and muh babby jesus after the age of 6 you should fucking kill yourself

Give me TMI ratings. I can see where you're coming from.
At least for me, ever since my grandfather died, the family just came apart and a lot of bad things happened so it just made holidays not as enjoyable for me, even though I have been trying to get out of this depressive state of mind for a bit now.
This year it's been pretty bad because I lost someone very dear to me, and the holidays just hit the hardest for some reason. A lot of life changes, both good and bad, and it's very hard to deal with.
It sucks when you're poor too for consumerism because you can't really spend money on gifts for others or yourself so you're "missing out". You can always make homemade goods like food and such that people can enjoy.
I'm sorry that Christmas sucks for you too OP. I hope your Christmastime won't be bad for you though. I hope you can find some enjoyment in it, even if it is something small or dumb.

The music really tests my patience, especially when you have Jewish artists making Christmas music. I hate how much it has shifted from being a family holiday to a consooming holiday.

That being said, it's mother's favorite holiday and she always decorates my folks house to the nines and it makes her happy. I had to spend years away from them for holidays and would get pictures of the house decorated which always made me miss being with family for the holidays. The fact it makes her so happy makes it still important to me despite all the bullshit associated with it now. Her Department 56 Christmas house collection is insane and I will cherish it in her passing.

This is good advice. I just wish the social pressure wasn't so strong. If it were up to me I'd buy no presents, go to a nice church service, visit my parents and then go home to enjoy some hot cocoa. But if I did only that it'd basically be akin to me committing social suicide in my family. Everyone would be furious I refused to partake in all the expected rituals and I'd never live it down.
