@Caesare Simple native Texans are used to driving in extreme rain, and extreme heat. We have two seasons in Texas Monsoon ie storm season and drought.
California people are only used to minor snow and good weather. They don't understand that it's normal for driving in Texas to be pleasant, then washout, then back to normal.

@Caesare fascinating post. I'm half Acadian and always found French heritage in the US South interesting but can't say I have any deep understanding of it. The spicy stuff being Cajun/Acadian always made me skeptical bc traditional Acadian cuisine is nothing like that, though it does sound good.
Sorry for bringing up pop culture crap but what do you think about the new Interview with the Vampire TV series? They made the Creole vampire who was a green eyed, pale skinned white plantation owner in the book, mixed race black and a BROTHEL owner?? I just can't see Louis de Pointe du Lac owning a brothel. Yuck.

I've read historical fiction where Creole used to mean pre-Acadian French immigrants but I've seen modern shows like Swamp People where they clearly mean it as mulatto.

I've never watched it but I think it's silly any time they change a character like that for no good reason.
There are mixed race Creoles but they are very much the minority, but the term itself is cultural, meaning local born French but like I was saying in that earlier message, it grew in a way to mean local born from that area.

Orange is actual cultural Appalachia. Yellow is just the ARC which is very political, there's nothing remotely Appalachian about Mississippi.

The point of nationalism or any sort of cultural affinity/heritage, to me, isn't whether a place is particularly good or not (and I'd argue that most of Appalachia is just normal, people dramatically overstate the extent of crime and poverty and other dysfunction in it, understate the extent of that in Midwestern suburbia, and also make a bigger deal out of things than they warrant, people talk about poor places like Mississippi as if it was Africa when it's still one of the highest standards of living on Earth and you wouldn't even notice the difference), and they also tend to conflate political and economic aspects of a place with its culture (art, music, architecture, religion, clothing, etc).
The point of nationalism, or studying your culture, is that nations/cultures are essentially just modern tribes and a person has an obligation to be loyal to their tribe and to honor their ancestors, and part of that is developing an appreciation for the distinctive folkways of that culture. To the extent the culture has problems you can try to fix it but you don't just turn your back on it, you attempt to improve it. In some ways the Japanese went overboard, but I think they serve as a good example of that. I don't like that they suppressed things like traditional clothing during their Westernization, but in general Westernizing for them mainly meant implementing technologies and institutions that made them competitive while still nourishing their cultural heritage.
The sort of person who throws it all out because their culture is inferior in some specific regard to another is contemptible and often takes a very narrow view of what makes a place good. I wouldn't want to live anywhere outside of the South, because my quality of life is driven less by what official statistics say about it and more about the experiential quality of living there and the soul of the people there. For me I find that I am comfortable around Southerners and are genuinely much more polite, enjoy the appearance of the land and climate, and have disdain for the attitudes of people outside, like the totalitarian inclinations and general uptightness and lifelessness of Yankees. It is a place that has color and will in it, which is worth more to me than somewhat higher test scores or lower meth arrests or whatever.

People who want a look at what real Appalachian America looks like should watch The Wild Wonderful Whites of West Virginia. That is what it is more akin to than a farm, trad wife, and eight kids.

There are adjunct populations of Appalachian culture in the extreme NE of Mississippi, the Hill Country of North Mississippi, Tishamingo County for example. The local accent there is predominantly Appalachian influenced because of the nearby influence of Alabama coal country. like Walker County. Hillbilly speak is different from the coastal plain accent, sometimes called Plantation southern (Full disclourse, My accent is from the Old South).

Yes, Asheville is a shithole city full of BLM signs, fag flags, and Ukrainian flags, because it's full of commies. You know who they are. Just visit Asheville and ask them about Austin, Portland, Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Salt Lake City, and all the other places they've shat up over the years. Most of them have lived in one or more of those places.
