How do you buy a Nintendo 3DS without getting ripped off?

What the hell is going on here? Why does every model of the 3DS, used, cost more than a new Switch? I figure they must be scarce because they ended production right before COVID, so the remaining stock got scooped up, but, still?! In the past, a game system three years out of production could be scooped up for usually around $50 a pop, but not here in Clown World. Still, this system is old now, and even the base models are going for more than they cost brand new, 11 years ago. Even imported ones are overpriced, and the 3DS is region locked! What the fuck, man?
 
You're looking at Amazon listings, the site is a disaster in general plus you're supporting Amazon by using it. Scalpers party on anything that is no longer produced, sometimes even if nobody cares about it because bots will continually increase prices on each other.

But really if you want a 3ds for a good price, you need to buy one between 2011 - 2016. Today? Maybe Japanese imports. Any Nintendo stuff, first party electronics from actually known brands in general are scalped on every single western site. Some sites are worse than others for sure. Ebay is about as bad now.

edit - didn't see you already mentioned imports. wtf? how bad are even those prices? why is there even such a major market for the 3ds? It's one of the most produced nintendo products ever.
 
Holy shit, those exploded in price, what the actual fuck. 2DS was like $100, I bet that shit is easily double now. I should have held onto one.

I think I better snatch up some Switch when they start phasing that out.

This 100%. I'm a faggot who collects retro videogames as a hobby so speaking from personal experience please go for Facebook marketplace or craigslist. After COVID-19 hit a bunch of people were stuck with nothing to do so they started wanting to relieve their childhoods by purchasing their old consoles and games and this kicked off an INSANE upward swing in prices for every console and game no longer in production, especially with Nintendo items. People on eBay are asking insane prices for systems and faggots who can't be bothered to do 3 seconds of research past the first page of google buy them so the market responds by upping the price more. There is a huge new trend of selling old video game shit with the term "RETRO GAMING" in the title as an excuse to charge an exorbitant price for it. If you want a hearty laugh just go on eBay and try searching for CRT TVs. I got a 34" CRT for 5 bucks by hauling it from some old couple on Facebook marketplace while retards are selling TVs of similar sizes for 600$ WITHOUT SHIPPING.

More often than not people on Facebook marketplace are just people trying to make a quick buck by pawning off their old systems or moms selling stuff their kids left behind before going to college. They have much more reasonable prices, just make sure to take a look at the sellers' profile so you don't get robbed and/or raped depending on the location.

Unless you're into that, then go nuts.

Yeah, i paid 100 yurodollars for mine brand new in what feels like not too long ago. Those 3DS prices are a joke, this whole scalping thing got way out of control. Can't wait for the recession to really hit and all these niggers sitting on their merchandise forever.

depends on the game you want to play.

Most rpg and strategy games are not that different to play on citra.

But a game like kid icarus uprising you only can get "the right" experience on 3ds it would feel ultra weird on citra.
 
These are not scarse in the slightest, check eBay for one in a condition you like and with pictures of it working and buy that, good chance youll get a better deal than some shitty amazon refurbished renewed one
 
Afaik the 3DS its dead-easy to jailbreak and load ROMs, meanwhile the switch only the very early models can be flash modded, for the current ones and the lite you need a tiny modchip and a EE degree to install that.

Anyway, just use citra instead of going blind looking at that terrible lowres screen. I barely even bother with my PSP and just emulate it for that very reason.
 
3DS prices have always been terrible on Amazon for some reason. And they went out of production two or three years ago, so you’re too late if you want to get a new one at a low price.
I wish I had gotten a New 2DS XL when they were $99 new to replace my old XL, but oh well.
 
For what it is worth, swapping out the c-nub with a psp-1000 thumb pad is a significant upgrade and really easy to accomplish seeing as the snap-on connector is identical.

Strongly recommended tweak for your later model 3DS/2DS systems. I choose the 2DS XL model because the 3D is not really useful. The best 3D game is a DSi game called Looksley's Lineup and it uses the cameras to crate much more immersive 3D effects.
 
I snagged a 3DS in aqua blue at the thrift store for $50.
