How do you buy a Nintendo 3DS without getting ripped off?

WATA made every fuckhead think they're sitting on a goldmine.

I have one independant game store in my area, and their prices are straight up the same as ebay or amazon.
I want a Vita, but I don't want to pay $280 for a fucking used handheld. (Or worse, Refurb)
Even the ones in BAD shape are priced that way.

The other problem with Refurb is you're getting something slapped together by someone who truly does not give a shit. Does it post? yes? SELL IT.

I saw its still worth looking. After jail breaking my old 3DS I found out that some one that had setup a 'fake" 3DS eShop that had all the Games/Virtual Console/etc for easy download and install. No transferring, just search and download.
That was the real eShop. FreeShop was just a frontend that grabbed the games directly from Nintendo's servers. It(another program, same principle) also worked for the Wii-U.

2DS XL is the way to go.

I choose the 2DS XL model because the 3D is not really useful.
This is a bad idea. The 2ds was made as cheap as possible. Even if you don't use 3d, get a 3ds. It has a much higher build quality and is much more solid. The 2dsXL is made entirely of plastic, even the backing support of the top screen is just plastic, meaning that if you put the slightest pressure on the top screen (like putting it in your pocket), the plastic will bend and crack the LCD. I've had my nu3dsxl for years now and its been abused, the screen is leaking lcd fluid, but its still completely functional. My brother bought a brand new 2dsxl and the top screen snapped itself within a week.

It sounds like you and your brother are spergs. I bought a 2DSXL and a spare and treat the one I use well and don't abuse it and it works just fine.

Amazing.

Also swap out your nubs you won't regret it.

My 3ds was already scuffed because I got it 'refurbed' from eb-games/gamestop. You cant deny the 2dsxl is built as cheap as possible, and I'm not joking when I say the backing frame for the LCD is made of plastic instead of any sort of metal.

here is a picture from iFixit of the top half of the 2dsXL, just the screen sitting in the thin plastic shell

here is the new 3dsXL top half, you can see the screen is encased in a metal shell, combined with a much more solid plastic build around it.

I am friends with the owner of a retro game store, and he has told me about how many people come to him with 2dsXLs with busted top screens. Its literally a case of Nintendo saving as much money as they can. Not saying you cant use it without breaking the screen, just saying if you want better build quality, get a 3ds

I have swapped the nub, but it slightly sticks out beyond the bottom just a bit so it can scuff the top screen after years of use, so either sand the nub down a bit or deal with that.

You're the guy who was telling me yesterday that he got permabanned by ebay for getting pissy with them in e-mails over trivial issues, right? If so, too bad.

104 dollars

"This ebay listing has now ended."

Congrats whoever has purchased this.
Maybe I should sell my own, never been played, only dropped once.

Or I could play some of my boatloads of games on it...

Ebay also has a tendency to sell Nintendo 3DS’s that need to be tested and fixed, while also trying to make you purchase it for almost a $100 in the process. Greed and scalpers really do go hand in hand.

If anything, I’m trying to get the famous Original Titanium Nintendo DS just in time for Black Friday this year, and I’m waiting to see how much in the hundreds they are asking for a payment.

just download citra
I did! Rhythm Heaven Megamix is unplayable on it, to the surprise of no one, because rhythm games never work well in emulators.

Why are you buying a 3DS? Get with the times, old man.
3DS has a stupid number of exclusives, plus piracy's great on it thanks to small file sizes.

But really if you want a 3ds for a good price, you need to buy one between 2011 - 2016.
I did! I also have terrible luck with the 3DS specifically, for whatever reason. I've got two completely broken ones that may as well be scrapped, and then a New that needs a replacement button board that just isn't easy to find outside of shattered screen ones, which also aren't as cheap as they should be.

edit - didn't see you already mentioned imports. wtf? how bad are even those prices? why is there even such a major market for the 3ds? It's one of the most produced nintendo products ever.
The best deal I've found for a New model so far is a Japanese Minecraft-themed one on Play-Asia for $264. I don't have an issue with buying an imported one, considering I'm gonna hack it the moment it arrives, but it's still fucked that even one with normie-excluding regional lockout's still that pricey.

Had the same problem with mother 3 and the rhythm combo system.
So I get you, you're right

I once got threatened with account closure by ebay because the chingchong I was ordering PSP screens from kept sending busted units in regular mail envelopes (unpadded)
When I told the phone agent I was cool with closing the account as long as I got my refund, they stopped playing the heavy and processed the refund. The agent then "offered" to leave my account open.

I never have more trouble ordering shit than with handhelds. They're fiddly bits of shit, and I prefer buying off a shelf. It was so much easier when pawn shops were full of the fuckers.

You had to buy one years ago before collectors started fucking with the market. I have a triforce New 3DS XL that I got right before covid happened and prices went insane. The games are going up fast too, Yo Kai Watch 3 released in 2019 and it's already $200-$300 easy. Any 3DS game released after the Switch launch is going to be pricey eventually.

I took a look at local listings and while they're not op insane but still insane. The thing is that no one is buying them, it looks like a bunch of idiots are listing used 3DS's at €150-200 and get no buyers. Maybe if you buy the used 3DS for €450 on Amazon they ship you drugs.

It was great and the reason i bought my 2DS in the first place. As far as i know FBI (the hacked storefront, not the feds) downloaded the games directly from Nintendo's servers via the spoofed tickets it generated with no way for Nintendo to see that they're getting fucked by pirates. Massive blunder by Nintendo and showed once again how bad they are at anything internet and internet security.

Mine (non-XL red&white) is around 4 years old and still in top condition, but i agree that you can feel how cheaply it is made. I'm lucky that i never dropped it or anything, it looks and feels like it would shatter into a million pieces, definitly not made out of Nintendium. It's also a lot less ergonomic than my slim DS. The 100€ price was still unbeatable and it was a bundle that guaranteed a hackable firmware number.

Edit: Ah, i see @Smaug's Smokey Hole 2 already mentioned the eShop thing, i should get in the habit of reading all new posts before posting myself.
