Disaster Why is California’s Oak Fire spreading so fast? - 3 days, 18,500+ acres, 26% containment

Officials and experts say that low humidity, high fuel load and sloping topography are creating a “perfect recipe” for extreme fire behavior at Central California’s Oak Fire. The fire exploded overnight in Mariposa County after breaking out Friday afternoon, expanding to 6,500 acres by Saturday morning. The fast-moving blaze, about an hour from Yosemite National Park, is exhibiting “extreme” fire activity, Cal Fire said in a morning incident report, and has destroyed 10 structures and threatens 2,000 more.

By Sunday morning, the fire had burned 14,281 acres.

Sierra National Forest spokesman Daniel Patterson said Saturday that the fire appeared to be weather and topography driven. A “whole combination of factors” led to explosive growth Friday and overnight, including dry and hot weather, and rugged terrain with an abundance of dry trees and grass. “There was some decent wind yesterday, and we’re in a 1,200-year drought,” Patterson added. “And all that is the perfect recipe for extreme fire behavior. We have been seeing this in California in recent years.”

OAK FIRE DISPLAYS UNUSUAL NIGHTTIME BEHAVIOR​

California’s blazes tend to slow overnight, when temperatures drop and humidity rises. But the Oak Fire burned actively through the night, Cal Fire said, amid poor humidity recovery and hotter than normal temperatures.
Crews working to establish containment lines must deal with steep topography that is allowing the blaze to make quick runs. Crews also have to contend with abundant sources of fuel. The area in which the fire is burning — near Jerseydale and Bootjack — has not burned since 1924, Crystal Kolden, a pyrogeographer and a professor at UC Merced, said on Friday. Kolden, who studies wildfire, added that the Oak Fire flared so quickly due to three primary factors: fuel load, heat and the very dry air due to a 108-degree day.

FIRE SPREADS IN ALL DIRECTIONS​

Daniel Swain, a climate scientist and fire expert at UCLA, wrote on social media Saturday that an “interesting and complicated” aspect of the Oak Fire’s initial explosion is that it was able to spread in every direction, both uphill and downhill. Swain attributed the phenomenon to the dry fuel load from the ongoing drought.
The fire was driven by some wind Friday, which let up into Saturday, Patterson said. But Swain said on social media that the lack of wind may not slow the blaze, which appears to be “strongly fuels and topography-dominated.”

“With (the Oak Fire), streak of relatively modest and non-destructive wildfires in CA so far this season appears to be over,” Swain wrote in a social media post. “This continues to be an intense & fast-moving fire.”

I think I figured put why there is so much fuel. Control burns are common firefighting practice as it eats the dry plant matter and reinvigorate the soil. Which makes it safer from wildfires in the long run. But because the government purposefully burning acres of wilderness doesnt look good to liberal voters, CA doesn't really do this as often as they should. Combined with the dry heat, it causes the wildfire to easily go out of control.

1. In most cities in Silicon Valley land once you get your probation it is almost impossible to get fired from their positions. That is how strong their union is
2. In most cities in Silicon Valley THEY have some of the best benefit packages that rivals corporations.
3. THEIR RETIREMENT.

A) In most cities in Silicon Valley they have the option of buying up to 5 years to boost their retirement benefits. They can do this in payments or an up from cost to them. Most fire fighters that I know do this.

B) In most cities in Silicon Valley the fire fighters are on a CALPERS or something affiliated with CALPERS. Depending on who you work for, and when you get into the service it sort of varies.

The family I know was this formula. 3% x number a years in service. Minimum retirement was age 50. So with one of my wealthier family members. They bought in the 5 years, worked 25 years and retired at age 50 WITH 90% OF WHAT THEY MADE WHILE THEY WERE WORKING. WITH MEDICAL/SERVICE PACKAGE.

So lets just say that family member made 200 thousand a year when they retired. That family member would get 180 000 in their retirement which is 15 thousand per month before taxes of course.

Yup several of my extended family members had that sweet retirement deal and one of them was wealthier than I until recently. But they had the big money earlier than I to make investments faster than I and to the 1% wealth bracket 8 years earlier than I.

I was the dumbass who did not go into state government in that manner.


Fire fighters, police officers, teachers, Correction officers, high level administrators in cities get some very sweet retirement deals that I know first hand if they have CALPERS. CALSTERS (teachers you want to see a fucking rip off of tax payers dollars look at the teachers retirement in CalSters). City, county independent retirement are all of a similar state.

It has been a strain on Calpers and the State/City/County governments for 23 years since Gray Davis signed certain retirement laws into being.

You could be low level technician or even a School Janitor. If you are paying into CALPERS you ARE going to get a good retirement... so far that is. You also have a choice in most cases to join a Union but that depends what city/county/school you are in. But most people do.

However those retirement numbers are changing because of the stress on the Retirement system is very real.


One of my friends got in 2008. IT Department for the State of California Her CALPERS numbers retirement is 2% @ 60 years of age.

If she was hired in 2007 she would have got a 2.5% @ age 55%.

Another of my friends is an Electrician for Bererkly. Non CALPers but very similar. His is 2% @ the age of 60. He make 36 per hour doing simple shit. As 8 years temp 2 years in the system now. Got in his 50's. As we know it takes a bit a networking to get into sweet deals.

Another person who I've lost contact with retired in 2005 at age 63 2. with 40 years on (5 years bought in) in paperwork. He got the max. 100% of his retirement.

Here is the CALPERS 2%@ 55 years of age for percent numbers.

They didn't give up, they passed legislation making it illegal. It's one thing to just stop budgeting for it, but they passed laws making it illegal to do controlled burn, dead brush removal, and the like. They want this to happen.
 
There's a lot of focus on fire prevention here, but not that California and the rest of southwest have been drying up the last 20 years.

You know, those californians must be feeling pretty down right now, so I think I have a solution to their problem. As a show of friendship and solidarity Australia can ship them some nice, big, eucalyptus trees to help replace the ones lost to this fire. I'm sure that'll make them feel better.

IIRC, y'all already did that (or it's just convergent evolution/relatives from the last time Ausland and 'Murica were physically connected in the Mesozoic). Those drought-resistant oils do make excellent forest fire fuel, and even better, whatever doesn't combust entirely winds up getting into the soil, gelling, and helping with mudslides the next time the rainy season comes!

One thing I wanna add about this epic rant.

CalPers MUST be paid out. It's actually written into California's laws. They can't fuck with it.

The left had a lot of reasons to go after Trump, but one of my pet theories is that they did NOT want to go hat in hand to him for a bailout.
