Queerness is explained as what happened when Lesbian Theory broke away from feminism to find common ground with Gay Theory. Historically, lesbian rights are the same as women's rights, so feminism fit just fine. The only things lesbians and gays had in common were oppression (objective) and otherness (subjective). This opened a space called Queerness: a solidarity in otherness opposed to heteronormativity.
Now, that's all okay, in theory. But lesbians soon discovered that gay men are far too permissive for their own good. A gay guy who really likes leather and needs to wear a harness in public? Sure, you know a guy who does that. Welcome in. Pedos would come along and say, "I'm queer too! I feel a sense of otherness. Lots of accomplished gay men are pedophiles. I can even write an essay!". In. Troons would come along, though not just the drag queens the gays were familiar with. AGPs. Sissies. The gays would roll over for it because 'different strokes for different folks, shut up, dykes'. LGBTQ.
Kiwis mock the "fake queers" all the time but that's missing the point. The Tumblrinas, "MAPS", furfags, fetishists, polyamorists, bdsm, POCS sufferers, spicy straights... they are the Q, because Queer is anything and the gays and lesbians didn't stop it. They let them in. The quiet part is out loud.
If only lesbians had stuck to being women and loving women and writing their own newsletters instead of trying to form an alliance with weak gay men. Will lesbians save the day? Seeing bulldykes and straight women having lunch together gives me some hope. Gay men telling a 5'1" TIF they don't like pussy is easy. Support your lesbian friends, Kiwis, and tell the fags in your life to grow a spine.
