Also is there any reason at all to use these newer versions? The online functionality seems like intrusive nonsense and there are no major advancements besides aforementioned telemetry bullshit. I still have my CDs for Office 2000 and that shit works fine.

There are only two reasons not to stick with Office 200x.
One: security patches, if you don't plan on running Office exclusively in an electronic condom. Office 2007 and earlier have serious unpatched security holes.
Two: full compatibility with the XML-based formats (.docx, .xlsx, etc) if you want or need them.

My general impression is that if it's not sufficient for some reason, you'd know it. Power users and people dealing with autistic systems that accept only genuine Microsoft (R) Office (TM) files find that there's no substitute for the real thing. But I'm not one of them.

I second OpenOffice. It looks funny, smells funny, and tastes funny, kind of like a Dollar General version of Hot Pockets, but as long as you stick with .doc and do NOT fool around with .docx, no one will be the wiser.

There's also GIMP, if you want to erode Adobe's market share.

I mean the average guy is gonna use MS Office for two things: Word and Powerpoint. From my experience, The 2002 versions + OpenOffice are perfectly usable. Hell, just save all your files on .doc and you'll be fine. If you use anything after Vista and hate Microsoft just use Google Docs then lol.

Not saying 2007 and prior didn't; but the rate current MS products call home keeps me away from them. Doesn't help that everything after 2016 has become a 365 annual license.

Office 2007 and 2010 are still getting updates, untampered volume license ISO can be found on any tracker and activated with KMS. For now I just don't see any reason to use bloated >2013 versions when older ones open same documents just fine.
