Not really. Your average person doesn't know or care about the tenative Ukrainian geopolitical position, and explanations about strategic positioning against russia will just sound like excuses to them.
Yer average person is just gonna see Biden sending a bunch of americans to die in another country, and the death toll against a near-peer is going to be horrific, even if you are winning. You're talking entire afghanistans happening weekly, if Russia makes good use of their artillery and air forces. Less than 3,000 Americans died in afghanistan over its entire run, afaik.
edit: Those numbers are probably very pessimistic, you'd need to see division scale combat for it to be that bad. Still, its gonna be a bloody meat grinder.

It does matter in that a Defensive War is viewed by the American populace as being one that was started with us, and thus allowing the sitting President some leeway in how it is spun. Whether it is viewed by Americans as an offensive or Defensive war will set the boundaries of what media spin can actually do.

Church-State Symphonia. Russian Orthodox is part of the state, and their clergy must not disagree nor disparage the state or its leaders. By controlling the faith they control the faithful. The state isn't supposed to interfere with religion either, but when you're not assassination-shy you tend to get your way.
