A friend of mine made friends with an Aiden in our town specifically out of pity for the trans cause (some kind of online social group, it sounded gross and stupid). I only met this ftm once, she was sad and rude, like the kind of person who acts weird and pissed off at you even when you're trying to be friendly. The friendship exploded spectacularly, of course. It only took a few months. My friend said this Aiden once missed a very big important thing because she refused to leave her apartment because .... there was a firetruck outside and it scared her.

I can't imagine the level of dysfunction that would cause this. How does someone like this survive? Surely pity can only take them so far, when they often alienate even those people who are extremely sympathetic to their cause.
