Sorry if I reply to a post 50 pages old, but while I was catching up with the thread I noticed the stats about Italy.
I was honestly surprised about them being so high because Italian murder rate is fairly low ( 0,6 per 100000, half of UK murder rate), so I went in to do some research.
The Trans Murder Rate project is supposed to release a list with names and some details of the victims together with the chart, but they don't always do that - I could only find information about 14 out of the 19 victims of the years I looked at. I could go back until 2014, then the sources become murky as fuck: no names listed, the source being "LGBT organization in Brazil", etc.
A lot of the cases I saw listed in articles from LGBT organizations listed suicides, a car accident and even a cis woman who was murdered by a family member because of her trans partner.
Back to the list. The majority of women in these cases seem to be south american sex workers (10/14). The remaining were 3 prostitutes (2 Italian and 1 Romanian) and a trans man who was a mafia boss and was killed in a hit (lol). So 93% of the trans women killed were prostitutes.
It hardly seems like random trans women are being victimized because of their transness, it just seems like being a prostitute is a really high risk job.
To draw a comparison with cis women, around 190 prostitutes were killed over the last 15 years. They make up 6% of female victims of homicide despite being a small fragment of the population (around 0,22% of Italian women).

In defense of Jan Morris- she (and I’ll use She for Jan cause I actually respect her work) authored the Pax Britannica, a trilogy that we used in college back in the day. She’s a distinguished academician. I know nothing about her personal life, and that alone shows some discernment.
I’d actually consider her brave for having the surgery and not hiding it from her colleagues. That was practically unheard of back then.
I also think there’s a lot of merit to the older trans showing by example that the younger generation would benefit by waiting till their 20s or older to start hormones and surgeries. I think we’ve all seen the damage done to children by pushing them into this madness.

A few posters here have pointed out that we owe this entire insanity to sex becoming commonplace and less taboo, and for a minute I didn't see anything unusual about that statement, like "that sounds about right!".
But then I started thinking about it and...did porn really become commonplace? Thinking about daily life and interactions I think I'm seeing the entire opposite. Indian men often behave in ways that makes them unbearable to be in the room with. at the same time that sex workers were being told that they should be fine to work with a TIM, they should fight for their workplaces to employ TIMs, that "cis" sex workers were compliant in violence against TIMs by not doing these things etc, they were being told that they were fatphobic and bad at their jobs for not wanting to see obese men, or racist and leveraging their white privilege to discriminate against Indian men (sex workers of all races, including Indian, hate Indian clientele. their BEHAVIOUR is the reason, not their race. the behaviour is cultural, of course, but it is fucking unbearable and very distinct amongst them). the reason I thought to mention any of this at all is because the end goal is the same - put limitations on women to say no to sex with men. and it all stemmed from the same male-dominated hyper liberal chatroom rhetoric.
no nuance for the complex conditions that women end up in sex work was present, or consideration for how essential it is for sex workers to retain any control at all over the clients they see. in retrospect, it was all so insidious.
