Polish President Karol Nawrocki has stripped Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky of Poland’s highest state honor, the Order of the White Eagle, after Kiev named a military unit after a nationalist group implicated in the wartime massacres of Poles and Jews.

Nawrocki announced the decision in a video statement on X on Friday, saying that “historical truth is not and can never be a bargaining chip” and that “the memory of the victims is the moral duty of the Polish state.”
The move follows weeks of growing tensions between Warsaw and Kiev after Zelensky signed a decree in late May granting the honorary title “Heroes of the UPA” to the Special Operations Center North. The designation refers to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), the armed wing of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). Zelensky said the measure was intended to revive the “historic traditions of the national army.”
Nawrocki said the decision crossed a red line, noting that for “the vast majority of Polish society,” the UPA remains synonymous with atrocities committed against Polish people during World War II. Poland officially recognizes the actions of the OUN and UPA as genocide.

“Facts are not subject to negotiation,” Nawrocki said, adding that they do not change with political expediency.
“The facts are that at least 100,000 Polish citizens were murdered by the UPA... only because they were Poles or Jews or other minorities,” he stated.
The Polish leader argued that naming a Ukrainian military unit after the UPA “has a meaning that goes far beyond the internal affairs of Ukraine” and described Kiev’s glorification of the group as “insulting, incomprehensible and deeply disappointing.”
The decision has drawn support from prominent Polish political figures. Former Prime Minister Leszek Miller called Zelensky’s decree “a spit in the face of Poles,” while former President Lech Walesa said it insulted “all murdered” Poles by honoring “UPA bandits.”
Zelenskiy's chief of staff renounces Polish medal amid WW2 dispute

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's chief of staff said on Saturday he was renouncing a Polish state medal after President Karol Nawrocki stripped Zelensky of Poland's top honour over a historical dispute.
The move by Kyrylo Budanov threatens to deepen a diplomatic rift between the close strategic partners as Kyiv rallies allies to push Russia to end its war on Ukraine.
Nawrocki said on Friday he was revoking the Order of the White Eagle from Zelenskiy after he renamed a military unit in honour of World War Two-era Ukrainian insurgents blamed for massacring Poles.
Budanov said he was renouncing the Golden Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, awarded to him last year, to protest against a move he described as "a gift" for Russia.
"Our nations have long-standing relations and different pages of history - both heroic and tragic," he posted on social media. "However, this should be an occasion for deep reflection, not crude political speculation."
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha had earlier called Nawrocki's decision a "strategic error", and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a Nawrocki opponent, urged both leaders to remain calm.
Stepan Bandera was based, and he was not a nazi. The nazis put him into sachsenhausen concentration camp. If Bandera had been a nazi, he would still be based, because he killed communists.
The vodkaniggers from rt are just butthurt that Ukraine is winning the war.
but it never ceases to amuse me that leftists constantly said any kind of association with Nazis was verboten, I believe the expression was "if 10 people are at a table and one of them is a Nazi, you have 10 Nazis".
yes, this is unironically what many people over here believe, if you dislike either side you must be sucking off the other, the notion of hating both is not an option
RT was also the only outfit which, unsurprisingly, didn't include glazing over hohol refugees and how they were making so many valuable contributions to our culture (stabbings, theft, assault, the usual nigger shit) and number going up
Ironic, that what Zelenskyi did is grounds for withdrawing the medal, while Poland still hasn't withdrawn the honor from someone like Mussolini lmao.
Doesn't really matter, it won't change anything in the actual relations of the countries. Just a small pissing match between the presidents. Prime minister of Poland is the one with more actual power, and he's very much pro EU, pro NATO, pro Ukraine etc.

There seems to be a lot of filthy communists in this thread, who hates on the ultra nationalist Bandera, who fought against the Soviet Union. You all suck globohomo dick.
This has been a thing since the war started, he's constantly shown wearing combat fatigues or army sweaters, as if to appear more down to earth or humble... while sipping cognac with the other aristocrats.
I may not be fully enmeshed in the mindset of a potato goblin at war but I'd frankly be quite pissed if I saw the leader of my country put his "wartime leader omg" fashion larp ahead of dressing for the job of meeting with world leaders whose support is critical to keep the war effort supplied. He's a fucking theater kid and he needs to act the appropriate role at the appropriate time like he's supposed to instead of feeding his sense of vanity.
Not paying lipservice to the guy the Poles hate when they align so strongly with you on the issue of "dead Russians" would also be a smart move but nobody lets me make decisions.

Got to love how they always use that one very carefully angled and lit photograph of the fuckwit. To the point it's hard to find other photos. But here is Mr. Bandera as both a younger and and older man than that photo:
Yes, I know the Ukraine Nazi larp has a historical basis because some Ukrainians fought for the Axis against the Russians, doesn't change the point of leftists being hypocrites on this issue
They did a bit more than fight against the Russians. They did unspeakable things to Polish people as well. This movie about the Volhynia massacres is good but tough viewing. Afterwards I looked up to see if two especially horrific moments could possibly be real. And they were.
The film was banned in Ukraine. It's not even partisan and wholly against Ukrainians as there are positive Ukrainian characters. But Poland supporting Ukraine is testament to the power of Globohomo.
