Mishima knew better than anyone it was a stupid way of dying. He made that abundantly clear in Runaway Horses, but that was the point. It was beautiful because it was stupid. The naivety of it made it pure. It wasn't about impressing people and LARPing as a samurai. Mishima understood those times were over and he was under no illusion his speech to make a coup was going to work. His death was simply about beauty. He knew he was getting old and to keep living was going to corrupt him, so he needed to go, and decided to do so in the most poetic way he could imagine.
