I am attempting to start a book club, and so for reference I was wondering what experiences users here have had with book clubs or how generally you would go about running one?
 
I was in an online one that kind of fell apart, but we had set up a weekly to biweekly meeting on the 'cord (I know, cringe). There we would discuss what happened in the chapters that we agreed to read up to, afterwards just a discussion on random life stuff.

Would your book club be in an IRL location with friends or an online thing?
And what books would you be wanting to read?
 
I wish especially if manga included. Sometimes I take a break from reading though which would make it difficult to contribute and would probably fall apart. When I am reading though the content is usually so entertaining on its own that a club to talk about it would detract from it.
 
All of the in person ones are ran by old ladies, and will probably die when they die out. Very sweet people, but I never really attended since I heard they take the book super slowly almost like reading a quarter of a chapter, and then discuss their grandchildren afterwards. Tried an online one during lockdowns, but like many things, it was ruined by troons so I left fast.

That sounds rather wholesome and preferrable than the usual middle aged moms getting wine drunk and gossiping about the suburban area they live in.
Bet you being there made their day too.
 
I was once part of a European book club years ago. We would get together a couple of times a week, bring the most disagreeable books we could find, and discuss them. It was often a bit chilly in the Bavarian winter, so we would put the books in a large pile and warm ourselves up using them as kindling. Good times.
 
I’ve tried a few times in the past but always dropped out because most of the time the people involved were insufferable. One group was full of pretentious faggots who acted like you were a knuckle-dragging troglodyte if you read anything not “literary” fiction. Another group was full of wannabe pretentious faggots who would mock you for enjoying Harlan Ellison and Thomas Ligotti but in the same breath express fondness for hacks like James Patterson and Dan Brown. Another group was full of neckbeard hipsters who only wanted to read turbo feminist stuff waxing poetic about their periods and numerous abortions.
