Desert Island Discs is a BBC Radio programme that has been airing weekly since 1942 in which guests must imagine themselves stranded on a desert island with only eight chosen audio recordings (usually music, but speeches and the like are also allowed), the Holy Bible (or equivalent religious text), the Complete Works of Shakespeare, a third book of their choosing, and a special luxury (which must be inanimate and in no way be used to contact the outside world). At the end, they must choose a single recording to "save from the waves".

Almost anyone who's anyone has been on the show from Bing Cosby to Stephen Fry and all and sundry in-between. The most popular recordings have been (including single movements) Händel's Messiah, Bach’s St Matthew Passion, and Louis Armstrong’s Wonderful World, whilst popular artists regardless of song include The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Frank Sinatra. Among the most popular books has been Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time), Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Lastly, popular luxuries have been paper (and writing materials), a piano, and a guitar.

I can't imagine many desert islands have electricity or a stereo set.

Just give me a copy of The Odyssey and I'll be fine.

I want to know what a stereotypical Tiktoker would offer to the table

The original concept was that they were gramophone records, with a hand-cranked gramophone to play them on
