A group of Yale University graduate students announced Tuesday evening that they would be undertaking a hunger strike to pressure the administration into granting them better union benefits. The strike is taking place in front of University President Peter Salovey’s home.

"Yale wants to make us wait and wait and wait … until we give up and go away," the eight members of the graduate student union Local 33 announced. "We have committed ourselves to waiting without eating."

Yale doctoral students currently earn a stipend $30,000 a year, receive free health care, and have their $40,000 tuition paid in full, according to Yale News. The university administration said in a statement that they understood the students concerns, but "strongly [urge] that students not put their health at risk or encourage others to do so."

As it turns out, the hunger strike might not put anyone's health in peril. According to a pamphlet posted on Twitter by a former Yale student, the hunger strike is "symbolic" and protesters can leave and get food when they can no longer go on.

Local 33 posted a video about the strike on their Facebook page, including quotes endorsing their fast from co-founder of the National Farm Workers Association Dolores Huerta and vice chair of the Democratic National Committee Maria Elena Durazo.

So a hunger strike until they get hungry.

Okey dokey.

I never understood hunger strikes because like, I cant imagine the people youre striking against give a fuck if you starve. And honestly, I cant imagine, in this day and age, with so many bullshit political stunts, that the average passerby gives a fuck either. Like how many Tibetans have lit themselves on fire now? I cant count because it's common enough.

I mean it's coldhearted, but I think one of the more grounded and realistic perspectives to take. Even in the best of times, Im cynical enough to think that a hunger strike is stupid because your opponent and 95% of the population isnt going to give a fuck.

A hunger strike relies on the people you're striking against actually giving a shit. Suffragettes did this shit. It actually works if the people you're protesting against care about you.

Nobody in the world gives a shit about spoiled brats who will only hunger strike until they actually feel like having a sandwich.

Well, a hunger strike works as long as a sufficiently powerful group of people take pity on you. A large part of your own population, the leadership of a powerful nation that will encourage a dialogue, stuff like that. Hunger strikes usually are meant to grab the attention of some such group.

What does not, however, work is a hunger strike that declares itself moot by proclaiming that the participants are not gonna go through with it.

You do not get to call something a "hunger strike" when you eat whenever you're hungry. Fuck off you Yale scum.

Remember when the Suffragettes did this and the British Government brutally force fed them, leading to many people sympathising with their cause and the eventually right of women to vote? They did not ask for a meal two days into the hunger strike.

Fucking whiners need to check their privilege.

They make 30k, have free healthcare and no tuition and they want more. A-log me if you will for this but seriously, I don't care if these cunts are gunned down. This is the most spoiled shit I've ever seen from grad students. Graduate students would kill for 30k a year plus health plus a fucking union. And they don't even have to teach for it! Also, what fucking grad student has a union? They aren't even doing a real hunger strike, they are just not fucking eating until their next meal. If they are this self-centered, this narcissistic, and this out of touch with the rest of society and graduate students in general, they aren't worth the resources to provide for. Better cull them now before they get rich and starve the poor so they can afford a second Yacht. They're going to Yale for fucks sake. Its not like they're going to be wanting for career options or money after graduation.

Maybe its making me irrationally angry, but at poorer Unis, I've seen graduate students struggle with awful stipends, no healthcare and barely any tuition support. And they have to teach. All doctoral students at Yale get 29k, regardless if they teach or not. I've seen grad students suffer through financial trouble constantly and basically had to cross their fingers to get institutional support or leave. Some had to ditch their degree because the university didn't have the budget for them and they couldn't afford both tuition and cost of living. Nor the burden of loans.

And these cunts are complaining about 5 years of guaranteed money (some even get a sixth year of funding)? At the most prestigious school in the country, possibly the entire planet? Fuck off and die. This amount of greed is sickening and added on to the fake hunger strike, spoiled attitude and pure narcissism is too much.

Noncommittal pussies.

They're non-committal because they're already spoiled cunts, they don't actually need anymore, they just want it.

depends on the field of study and institution. some will only take SJW snowflakes

I would bet $100 these are arts and humanities students.

>Want better union benefits
>Already earn a stipend of $30,000 a year, receive free health care, and have their $40,000 tuition paid in full

Oh, fuck off.
