That needs editing. DIT has been around a lot longer than 2016. Even the infinite-september of 2005 shed doubts on just how many people are online. Companies were paid millions to remove tens of millions of fake bot accounts a day from Myspace and friends reunited.

Eternal September was 1993, and it wasn't particularly focused on the issue of bots and non-human content, just an influx of people who didn't know or care about internet culture diluting it irreversibly, which does line up with Indians and Pakistanis and whoever getting major access to the internet. Bots obviously existed circa 2005 but the issue is inorganic content and activity completely supplanting organic equivalents, not just bots existing. Nowadays you have entire accounts run by bots following bots getting their content shared by bots and people too retarded to tell the difference, turning the median of discussion into bot generated content.
