I revisited the forum rules mod because I had an idea.

Right now, my forum rules mod looks like this:

This has a strict limitation. I cannot set rules depending on what view is being used. For instance, if I want to remind people when creating a thread that their thread should use archive.is links and the first sentence should be a "clincher" to make people understand why a lolcow is a lolcow, then I have to put that on every page. Sad!

I had two options with remedying this. Either 1) replace those checkboxes with textareas and have redundancy, or 2) use more complicated templating to allow dynamic, view-based syntax. I went with the better option and now rules can be designed like templates are, as shown:

And as a result, I don't see the first sentence anywhere else ...

Except where I want to.

So I decided I start working on the chat mod. This is its structure already after just about 2 days of work. It's quite complicated.

XF2 abstracts a lot of features that used to specifically surround only the post in a thread. They've made the system more robust so that, say, profile and media gallery comments can share a lot of more complicated features that a post might have. Reports, public warnings, search indexing, likes, etc. This means -- you guessed it -- chat messages may have these features seamlessly integrated into them as well.

Once the chat mod is stable and the sending / receiving messages works fine and looks good, I can start integrating other features. This means likes and search indexing (cue applause). Once the chat mod is 100% done, I'm going to start writing my own ratings mod to replace our current garbage weeaboo faggot made ratings mod, and take advantage of the XF2 structure to make it work with other content types.

As it stands right now, I've finally gotten the controller to accept messages, but this is only the first step. There's a lot of work to go.

And I'm working on the search feature for the chat archive, which I may or may not have enabled for KF2.

The search results link to an individual message which is highlighted and given some context before and after it was sent.
