Xbox Game Studios Stupidity Hate Thread Game Pass Edition

They deserve it, but obviously they think they can still market on "The Game Studio that made New Vegas" one more time with the main writer rehired. Plus Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 probably were just unsuccessful and not complete bombs.
The outer worlds 2 sold under 500k copies, probably closer to 300k. Its only saving grace was that its budget was probably on the lower end of AAA budgets. Go directly to goypass, do not collect $80.

I feel sorry for some of the devs, because i'm sure there were some that said "Hey, can we just make good games, and stop shoe horning in the "mordern agenda", before they were promptly written up by HR for making racial and terroristic threats for daring to speak the truth.

Actually more lenient than I thought, at least so far. I was expecting full shutters and cancellations but I guess the games in production will get funding to push them out the door. Just wondering who the hell the buyers are.

Oh I'm not trying to say it made even a little money, by 'just unsuccessful' I mean it probably didn't lose 10s of millions.

With all of these studios being released or being sold i feel like we are still essentially in the "nothing ever happens" phase. Like what Sony or Embracer buys them out and we still get slop? It is what it is. Arkane could still die tho

A cursory search suggested that the game had a ~$100m budget but let's be generous and assume it was less. Continuing that generous trend, let's also assume that the game sold 500k copies all at the low low price of $70 and not the $80 they initially wanted or on the sale it immediately went on. That's $35m before Valve or anyone else's fees.
Anyway, I'm not trying to get lost in the sauce but Obsidian quashed the notion of a TOW3 like a week after TOW2 released. I'm guessing the only reason they're not having their insides rearranged right now is that grounded 2 somehow made money.

I was hoping Arkane would finally bite it. I know plenty online and here on the Farms will say I'm a no taste doo-doo head, however, I loved Dishonored 1 and Dark Messiah. But let's look through their catalog and tell me they deserve to continue existing:

Fatalis: Good game, bit clunky. Not a bad first step.
Dark Messiah: Fun as a tech demo, but realistically, fairly generic.
KarmenStar: Fucking mobile game, lmao
Dishonored: Excellent game, but the fact that playing as the cool assassin is the designated "bad path" never sat well with me.
Dishonored 2: See above but with a less interesting plot and Anita getting involved to make it a game that sold much worse. Decent but not as well remembered as its predecessor.
Prey: I'm gonna say it: overrated, and the fact that no one bought it on release tells me that all the video essays saying it's a "hidden gem" don't understand most people were not interested. And before we bring out that tired "immersive sim" title, Deus Ex 1, System Shock 2 and others did it better, sold better too. I'll count it as a good game because I'm willing to accept other peoples taste.
Dishonored Death of the Outsider: Dishonored but you play as a black lesbian. Technically good, writing wise abysmal.
Wolfenstein Youngblood/Cyberpilot: Nails in the coffin of a whole franchise. Youngblood is unbelievably ass, Cyberpilot at least has the excuse of being a VR game.
Deathloop: Journos called it the best game of the year... I can't tell you one person I know in real life who played, let alone enjoyed it.
Redfall: Catastrophic failure that probably sent the studio to the Microsoft salt mines in all reality. Terrible idea, execution, and the fact that Phil Spencer came out of hiding to apologize is proof enough of the pure cringe it was.

So counting it all up, three games that are generally considered excellent, five middling ones, and three genuinely shit games. I know MS already killed their Austin office, but from a business perspective, most of their games were critical successes but flops in sales, and since they released Prey they haven't had a slam dunk worthy of proving they should be kept around.

That's more than I would of expected, but the reason is probably that they rehired New Vegas's lead writer John Gonzalez as the Creative Lead for something. He's stated they aren't making New Vegas 2, and I took that as a semantics because a new spinoff would be set in a new location most likely.

This week though Jason Screier, who is usually very reliable, said that Obsidian isn't working on any kind of Fallout game. I had assumed they dumped Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 to clear the slate for Fallout Baja Blast Radius, maybe even trying to very belatedly jump on the CRPG resurgence with the Pillars of Eternity company making a new old school Fallout(letting inexile continue with their own thing with Wasteland).

That doesn't seem to be the case, however. I can't imagine anything else Obsidian could have up their sleeves to spare them after chaining flops like they have. Possibly they are spared to drop whatever they are working on and forced to start a Fallout game as part of this reorganization.
