Was it an option? I read it was a stipulation by Valve that all the machines had to be capable of dual-booting Windows, maybe because they were aware SteamOS still wasn't ready for prime time.

For the Alienware ones, yeah but apparently that version of the Alpha wasn’t branded as a Steam machine. The hardware was completely identical to the Steam one, minus the logo though.

Even if the hardware market returns to post-AI sanity, you can still look forward to this being the new normal as die shrinks no longer automatically make chips dramatically cheaper the way they have for half a century. Sony could afford to sell the revised PSOne for $99 because the bill of materials in 2000 was a fraction of what it had been in 1994.

Update 10:43 a.m.: Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier has posted to Bluesky, “Despite a report this morning, I can confirm that Obsidian is not in negotiations to avoid shutting down. Plenty of details are still up in the air surrounding the layoffs (picture will be clear on Monday), but Xbox is keeping Obsidian, according to people familiar with the situation.”

Obsidian took a combined 14 years on avowed and outer worlds 2, made no money on either of them and get to stay around? I bet they're going to have big layoffs and be turned into a besethda side studio to help with fallout and elder scroll titles. While I'm calling bullshit with you that they make money as a studio, they also put out games regularly, unlike almost all of the other studios MS owns that are content to fuck around and suck tranny cock or whatever the fuck they do other than doing the work they're paid for. I googled Outer Worlds 2 sales out of curiosity and it didn't even sell a million copies. That's on PS4, Xbox and Steam combined.
