Now even some Democrats are starting to question the governor’s actions with his latest order. Is this a massive HIPAA violation? The courts are going to have some interesting cases when this is all over.

I actually think this is good. People in Chicago and LA have been asking for this because the sidewalks are too narrow and everyone is out walking and biking at once. I'm not sure they're going to handle cars though. Someone has suggested that that they close the outer two lanes of bigger 4-lane streets since there's less traffic.

Agreed, the Bay Area has some narrow ass sidewalks. From what I've heard though, they're not ticketing people driving on closed off streets, so I don't know how this is going to be enforced.

Lemme find a Google maps pic of one of the streets for reference.

EDIT: Ok here's the map

You'll notice that many of the new car-free streets are in East Oakland. This is because in this area of Oakland, people drive like crackheads.

Última edición:
OAKLAND, California (KRON) – In an effort to further promote social distancing and to simply have enough room to do so, the city of Oakland will be closing about 74 miles of city streets in order to give bicyclists and pedestrians more room to spread out.

Mayor Libby Schaaf announced the new initiative on Thursday, calling it “Oakland Slow Streets.”

The idea is to close roads to vehicular traffic mostly in and around residential neighborhoods.

More details are expected to be released later today.

-------

By closing residential streets, are they going to be basically barricading people in their neighborhoods? Sorry, can't drive to the store, your street's closed?

And remember Oakland isnt all ghetto. It runs from super-ghetto up to million-dollar-plus house neighborhoods. Will be interesting to see where this is implemented.

Officials stressed this was not a total closure of these streets, but rather that they were publicizing certain roads to be especially alert of cyclists and pedestrians. Local traffic including residents, emergency vehicles and other essential traffic will still be permitted, but through traffic is not allowed. However, officials said they don’t plan to issue citations.

Hot dog... more room for sideshows.

It'd be interesting to know if Oakland is one of the many cities that has studied the use of "road diets" where streets judged to have excess capacity for vehicles get reconfigured with fewer vehicle lanes while adding dedicated bike lanes. I could see Oakland using this temporary shutdown as a way to take some of four-lane streets having less traffic and reconfigure them to having one lane in each direction with a center turn lane and bike lanes on each edge once these streets are reopened to vehicular traffic.

As I think I mentioned in the mega-thread, there's also those that have unexpected downtime from work who now want to use the spare time to be productive and do all the little around-the-house projects (landscaping, repairs, etc.) they lacked the time to otherwise do. It makes no sense to tell people that they can still do work around the house, but that they can't buy the supplies, materials, or equipment they need for it.

Current Michigan Happenings

Stay home has been extended through April 30. Starting today (April 10):
  • Visiting neighbors or family is prohibited (with exceptions to check on the elderly, infirm, or pets).
  • Travel between two residences within the state is prohibited. For example, someone can't travel from their main home to a cottage.
  • Large stores can only have 4 customers per 1000 square feet (93 m^2). Smaller stores are limited to 25% capacity based on the fire codes.
  • Stores must have markings to help keep people 6 feet (2 m) apart in lines.
  • Large stores must close off access to areas dedicated to carpeting, flooring, furniture, gardening centers, plant nurseries, or paint.

In clarifying the latest orders:
  • Mowing one's own lawn is OK provided social distancing is practiced. Professional lawn care is only acceptable if it's necessary for safety & functioning of the home.
  • Some cities have opted not to ticket those unable to have their lawns mowed during the duration of the stay home orders.

Meanwhile, people are already pointing out -- or frustrated with -- loopholes and inconsistencies what what's allowed versus what isn't and what's still considered essential or non-essential. Key examples cited include:
  • State residents can't travel to a cottage elsewhere in the state, but people from out of state with a cottage in Michigan can still travel to theirs.
  • Lottery tickets may still be sold whether online or in stores (presumably because they help finance schools) while a can of paint or bag of seeds can't be sold.

They're cutting off the paint sections because we all know bored midwesterners are the devil's paintcan and will huff themselves into a whirlwind florida man style frenzy soon enough.

Cuomo went all in for NYC over NYS in today's briefing. Said:

1. There should be no rush to lift closing orders and restrictions for fear of second waves and safety

2. He doesn't know what May or June will even look like to think about opening back up

3. Because parents rely on school for daycare, businesses should not reopen till/unless schools do

4. The rest of the state will not open til NYC does

5. NY will not reopen til PA and CT do.

6. The rest of the country should not reopen til NYC does

Shit's fucked yo. Betting after we get through Easter, Mon or so, he will extend NY PAUSE til mid May or even all May.

So let me get this straight:
  • NY can't reopen before CT and PA
  • CT and PA can't reopen before NY
...??? So he's basically saying everything should be locked down until the heat death of the universe?

LA county has updated lockdown till May 15h. https://ktla.com/news/local-news/l-a-county-officials-to-provide-coronavirus-update/

All the crazy older ladies in my community groups are going nuts because, "We've been staying home, ordering groceries, and wearing masks! Why isn't it working?"
The local reddit groups skews a little younger and is like, "Umm... How are we gonna make our rent???? What is the actual plan here? Why are there new closures every day if our curve is low?"

Article dijo:
“Because everyone here is doing their part, because people are heeding the directives … what we can confirm is in fact the flattening of the curve in a way that’s actually saving lives"

Is there an official explanation for why they can say that lockdown measures are super effective without a control group but they can't say the same for promising medications?

Some neighboorhoods had a spike in crime like Queens during Corona-chan lockdown but in Chicago one guy shot and killed a home invader. I guess some prisonners will think twice before home invading unless they go to a gun free zone?

That Youtuber posted this comment of the day worth to share.

I love all the official talk about how "Crime Is Totally Down, Guys! Criminals aren't taking advantage of this!" Meanwhile there's a spike in virus-related scams and everyone should have seen #CoronaVirusLootCrew coming a mile away.

Because NYC is all that matters, so many people work in NYC that live in CT/NJ and NYC residents can easily travel to eat/shop in CT/NJ he wants to coordinate with those guys to make sure they are doing the same thing. And fuck you if you live in Plattsburgh or Cape May I guess.

Why are there new closures every day if our curve is low?"

Because it seems the curve is meaningless for reopening purposes. The plan seems to be an end goal of 3-12 months of total curfew, harsh laws, and govt control of food and supplies. The curve is a false promise to lull us into thinking there is a soon end to this as they slowly ramp up to the endgame.

This is your own fault for not having an abortion.

Don't need a car seat if you can't drive, citizen. :smug:
