I've been watching old episodes of Grand Designs (a bonglish TV programme about wealthy people who spend too much money to make or re-design their dream homes). The last few years of the show, the same refrain keeps popping up: "and then Covid happened". In every case it blows a year of work and between a quarter and a third of the development budget out of the water. It's got me thinking about the amount of wealth and time the government reaction took from everyone, but it's just casually treated as just an inconvenient natural event. Covid, that natural disaster that just magically forced entire economies to shut down, just rocks up and, without any human intervention, makes everyone stop working and stay at home while money hemorrhages from their bank accounts. How many people went bankrupt because of this? Right pissed off I am.

Flu is something that’s always going to be a risk. Flu has two major antigens, H and N and they change by two process; so called drift, and shift. Drift is just the minor changes, small mutations, it shift is when the whole ‘flavour’ of that H or N changes, that’s why we have numbers on them, like H1N1 etc.
The flus we are seeing now are echoes of past ones, mainly driven by drift. The risk is when a shift occurs and a whole new flavour of virus appears.
That’s sort of what H5N1 is - the virus shakes itself up in fowl and hogs and then spills over into new mammalian hosts. H5N1 is an example of that process happening. Right now it’s not really spreading much human to human. It’s likely that at some point we will see mutations that allow good human to human infection and at that point you’ve got a bad flu outbreak. All the historical ones were this happening.
So it’s a risk, it always is. If it happens, it’ll be like Hong Kong flu - the death toll almost certainly won’t be like Spanish flu becasue we have antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections and we have a solid tested flu vaccine platform that would spin up pretty quickly (and alas they’d probably push mRNA for it too..)
Flu has always been a risk for pandemic potential, it’s not going to be the andromeda strain, it’d be a nasty flu year, it’d kill off whatever weaker/ elderly cohort had built up and we’d vaccinate widely and just get on with it.
Same risk it’s been for hundreds of years, with lesser consequences due to modern medicine. Not something to panic over, we have solid flu surveillance systems.
The real current threats to human health from existing pathogens are:
- multi drug resistant pathogens. Turbo stds from gay orgies. Resistant fungi and bacteria. Widespread use especially in the third world of antibiotics in farming. TB. Once we hit a certain point, safe surgery will no longer exist.
- novel zoonoses spilling over from nature
- existing old fashioned diseases we’d eradicate rated being brought back by mass immigration

We really need to start upping our funding of new types of drugs, other treatments, as well as other ways to directly fight things in general. Esp against drug res crap and fungal threats. Also protean threats as well. Viruses need to be at the top of the list though given their ability to spread, sicken and kill like no other. I suspect the kind of medical and general tech it will take to deal with them will probably lead to treatment options for all sorts of things. Even cancer. Really need to gain more control over the immune system itself too. Not just for autoimmune but better strengthening of it and controlling it's reactions. (a lot of deadly elements of illnesses are actually caused by the immune system itself)
