WPlace - Paint the world - A collaborative pixel art canvas on a map of the world

wplace is the first excuse I have had to go and learn how krita works since I first installed Linux.

I am NOT an artist. I don't draw shit even for fun. I've still gone out and done some stuff. It's all been trial and error and using reference pictures to make it look good for me. Keep it simple, and you can iterate pretty easily until your happy with it. You will never be 100% satisfied with it.
Wplace started to get me more interested into pixel art stuff lol.
This site is linked in the Blue Marble interface, it converts any image to using wplace's colors, and you can include/exclude the paid colors from what it does:

It's not perfect though, because a lot of the time it will think certain colors are too close to each other and turn them into a big samey blob. You can see how this happened on the big Null face. You might not care either, because it's all just for messin' around anyway, but just felt like posting about it since I've been working with it/around it.

Here's a Lemmings exit door with its original colors:

Here's what happens with the wplace converter:

It decided two of the browns and greys are too similar so made them the same color which loses all the detail.

Here's what happens when I choose the dither option:

It looks close to the original but it's all noisy and gross.

But I can also manually edit the original to use wplace's colors. Some art programs have an indexed color / palette mode, where you can change a color on the palette and it changes all of those existing colors to the new color, sort of like how old video games have recolors of old enemies...they use the same sprite data and just change the palette. A very old free program I use to do this with is GraphicsGale.

So here is a quick and dirty recolor, maybe I could've chosen better colors to do this with, but at least it preserves all the areas of color in the original door so you don't lose any details:

if you guys have awesome pixel tips or resources do share!! These are great and I appreciate them so much! I was thinking about doing a photo of one of apopos hero rats near their headquarters (they sniff landmines) and this makes things so much easier than just eyeballing and praying.

Magawa is gone but not forgotten! Epic rat that one More about him here

Made my message clear to the deltafags near my hometown(at least as clear as i could by spending a shitton of my accumilated droplets onto quickly doing this)
if you intend to ruin their artwork, wait until after they've finished it since they'll likely never return to that area after completing it and will move on to the next town

i don't wanna ruin anything
even if i hate something, i'll NEVER vandalize art, as i draw them myself, so yk i wanna give that mutual respect
but i DO wanna write "stfu deltafags" as a way to vent my frustration of seeing these characters EVERYWHERE(though the main inspiration here is some of them vandalizing a memorial, if you do that, you WILL achive me disliking you)

My heart goes out to all you who helped this stupid project out, big pixel kiwa is now done. You have my gratitude, I will now go on to help others until I figure out my next project.

If you don't want to get banned on wplace for destroying trans flags:

Replace it with "real" artwork of some kind, don't just erase it or wallpaper over it.

It's explicitly in their rules: "Do not paint over other artworks using random colors or patterns just to mess things up."

So as long as you replace it with something that looks legit, you should be good. And the trans people might even think twice about covering over your nice little artwork with just their flag. THEY might even get in trouble for replacing YOUR artwork.

I know this is a lot more effort than most people want to go to, but this is how to get away with flag destruction.

Tbh even when wplace seems to be a waste of time, it's quite fun to learn how to convey the most important shapes and traits of something in the bare minimum form, and that's why I find hyperrealistic projects quite boring (except tribute to Cats, ofc). Also one learns that sprites aren't quite easy to design.
Deltatroon design is absolute clusterfuck, things I thought are from about four different games, turned out to be from just one.

The odysee one was hard to make in such a small space.

If you think about it, our area is too dangerous to get raided by a streamer or their fans. They will have to deal with getting doxed phonebooked and/or a million slurs spontaniously appearing on the live stream.

Somewhere on the AUS-NZ bridge....

I love its scuffed nature, I used a combined 1k pixels on squares for it because I wanted you to be free
