they have more life in their eyes in that art than in the actual game.
It's so fucking weird how they felt the need to redesign the beast wars guys in the netflix show. They're clearly not based on the kingdom figures because the kingdom figures are mostly (excluding rhinox) based on the cgi shows models but with realistic animal modes.

The earliest trailer actually featured an even trashier, more "gutter punk" look.Who can forget the vanity project redesign of Dante (the one of the right) for DMC. Not only was Dante redesigned to look like one of the projects higher-ups, but you get "creative" uses of "fuck you" in what could best be described as a middle schooler's attempt at being edgy. (They even ripped off Futurama in one of the plotlines.)
Overall though, as someone who's first game was DMC 2013 and was blissfully unaware of fan backlash, I liked the game and the characters for the most part. Sure, some of Dante's lines were clumsy and forced, like the "whore mother" exchange early on, but I liked his cheesy cracks like "Dont it seem to go on forever? Church." Even the "Not in a million years" line legacy fans seem to hate so much never came off as hostile to the original design to me. I just thought it was cheeky.
The problem really came when they use these goofy characters in service of touching on themes of real world issues in the story like corrupt media, corporate culture, and mass marketing of unhealthy food. These things are all complex and nuanced and the games take that literal demons are responaible for it is impossible to take seriously. DMC 5 was smart to go back to wacky wahoo pizza man adventures.

Joke's on all of us, video game covers in Japan still are betterSo is this the thread where I get to complain about how we Japs redesign your simple but effective movie posters into the most overblown, crowded pieces of gutter trash which only appeal to an audience taught to appreciate films based on the actors involved or the awards it gathered, and not the actual story?

It's the same with all vidya games nowadays: Just the game's character staring in front of you or just doing something. No recognizable symbols, or alternative covers, just that. It's boring and utterly detestable.

Underrated comment. I thought I was the only one who hated how Sugimori & co's art style "evolved" over the years. The more saturated designs look less distinctive overall.
