Worst Disney remake/reboot

Well at least it wasn't Baloo or Bagheera.

There was a Soviet cartoon adaption where Bagheera was a mother. It was, by the way, a beautiful cartoon and I wish it were available on DVD. A Russian acquaintance of mine didn't believe Bagheera was originally male until I downloaded a copy from Gutenberg.

I do not know if they wanted more females in the story, or if there was confusion when neuter nouns like "panther" were translated to Russian.

Panther in Russian is feminine ("pantera") and has no masculine form. Adjectives and verbs in the past tense take the noun's gender. The translator of the book, Nina Daruzes, decided to make the character female so as to have her consistently gendered grammatically, avoid breaking agreement, and avoid ugly constructs such as "the male of the panther". The cartoon took after the translation.

I would've easily said Lion King last year given how much it butchered the original movie with worse acting, lifeless animation (the technicals were pretty yes, but the animals had no expression to them), an inferior score, and many characters were butchered personality wise (mainly Scar, Mufasa, and Nala to name a few).

However I feel Mulan tops it because it was made to pander to the Chinese market and failed at it miserably especially for how much inaccuracy they have in regards to capturing Chinese culture. It didn't help that they took everything great and fun about the original movie and cut it all out. They got rid of pretty much most of the supporting cast, and made Mulan someone who was reliant on her intelligence and care for her family's honor into some hollow Mary Sue with chi powers. Mulan being a Mary Sue is a huge detriment to the original because Mulan was just a regular girl who grew to be a soldier along with the rest of her troop, but now Mulan is better than literally every other character and is just a superhero.

The new villains were really boring and forgettable. That witch lady was entirely unnecessary to the movie except to sacrifice herself to save Mulan. It really didn't seem necessary to include her in the movie at all as she added nothing of value. There were plenty of dumb character decisions that were only done to adhere to the script like Mulan becoming a general for no reason whatsoever, or how the Emperor protected himself..

They also got rid of many other things. All the music is now gone which really drains the personality from this movie, they made many scenes less emotional like when Mulan stole her dad's armor or going to the burnt village. The way these scenes were filmed feel more like video game cutscenes rather than actual important story beats especially with how they had to spell out to the audience what was going on in the burnt village scene. The editing is just bleh and the score is just extremely underwhelming.

It honestly gets worse with some behind the scenes things mainly with Chinese politics. The lead actress is a bad actress and also a bad person for pretty much supporting the suppression of Hong Kong protesters. Why am I saying this? Well parts of this movie were filmed near a fucking chinese concentration camp and that area it was in was directly thanked in the credits of the movie. It gets worse considering how Disney tries to portray themselves as some progressive company that looks out for the little guy when they aren't buying everything.

I still feel sorry for the animators that worked on that original film.

The lead actress is a bad actress and also a bad person for pretty much supporting the suppression of Hong Kong protesters. Why am I saying this? Well parts of this movie were filmed near a fucking chinese concentration camp and that area it was in was directly thanked in the credits of the movie. It gets worse considering how Disney tries to portray themselves as some progressive company that looks out for the little guy when they aren't buying everything.

Sad it happened at all. Walt would never stoop this low.

First pages dont' have much love for Beauty and the Beast, but the movie isn't really that bad.

They managed to do some things right, like explaining things that you only could have assumed in the animated movie. I like how they also gave more depth to characters like Beast and Gaston. Gaston being a former soldier actually explains a lot of why he's the man he is. I don't see him much as a villain, rather the antagonist.

Belle is all the opposite, though. That's a character that shouldn't have been given a backstory, or at least they should have been more careful. In the movie, Belle's a city girl who has nothing but contempt for the people around her. In the animated movie, it made sense why the tension goes both ways: she's a cloudcuckoolander (like her father) and that's how the towns perceive her while she thinks the people there are unable to see beyond their own limitations. Both statements are true. But when you make these people real characters, you can't help but feel she's been a snob who rubs her education on others. It's not the villagers' fault that they can't read or can't waste time rather than trying to survive. The fact that she's rewarded with becoming a Princess doesn't help much.

The rest of the movie is ok. All the other characters are more interesting than the protagonist, and I think it has a lot to do with how Emma Watson looks bored through the length of the movie. I guess she realised this movie was going to be the peak of her popularity before sinking into a world of femcelness.
