When people own nothing then "cancelling" them becomes a de-facto death sentence, only without the pesky need for courts and prisons. Doing that you have corporations rulling the country because the government's hold on physical violence doesn't matter any more. Everyone is just one phone call away from becoming homeless/a burden on their family.
