You can produce hydrogen in a ton of ways. Including the very simple and effective process of electrolysis.
What you seem to be talking about is SMR, which is one of the cheapest methods because it uses natural gas directly.
Obviously that's a retarded method for an energy storage solution, since natural gas is already an energy carrier.
The economics of hydrogen vehicles are made very inefficient by the laws of physics--convert electricity to hydrogen (via methane), compress and store hydrogen, pump hydrogen, convert back into electricty inside fuel cell--mean it takes all sorts of power losses along the way? Oil, ethanol, and electric vehicles do not have this problem.
Ethanol? Are you kidding me? You have to produce hydrogen, then ammonia from it, then use that fertilize plants, then grow them, then harvest, then ferment them, then distill it. How efficient. Or you make it from ethylene, the production of which contributes significantly to our carbon footprint.
And EVs have losses to, only about 80% of the energy from your socket actually ends up as stored energy in your batteries (which is about the same efficiency you can achieve with electrolysis). There's a reason EV batteries require cooling - they heat up = loss of energy.
And you're ignoring all the problems EVs bring, like the production of batteries, the limited life span of batteries, the strain on the domestic grid, etc..
