Leave aside any other casting discussions - just ask why they'd cast a 37 year old woman
Because it's Broadway and you just can't cast someone age appropriate because of how many years you need to put in to get the lead roles. They're almost always in their 30s, even if it's a musical set in highschool like grease or mean girls. People can't usually tell because they're hundreds of feet away.

Billy Elliott was a notable exception and they needed like 5 different boys cast in the lead at the same time because of how much energy was needed for the role.

Right, in a broadway show on stage, sure. But I'm specifically talking about the movie where you (a) have a lot more leeway because you're dealing with the finite production run not long-running shows and more significantly (b) the camera is right in the actresses' faces. I get what you're saying but you've maybe missed my point that I'm specifically talking about this movie. A 37 year old woman is not passing herself off as a first year university student.

Who gives a fuck? If you watch musicals you are a gay tranny nigger faggot anyways, a brown Shrek looking lesbian doesn't change that.

I know that and you know that but literally every film adaptation of a Broadway musical fucks up like that. Dear Evan Hansen was completely mocked for it. Mean girls musical was too.

Only the type of idiot that can't see that thinks it's a great idea to bring these shitty plots to the big screen

I've never had the misfortune of seeing that movie, though I have watched the entirety of Jenny Nicholson's disection of the movie which I quite enjoyed.

I think we're just violently agreeing with each other. You're saying "they always do this and it's stupid" and I'm saying "it's stupid that they always do this." The only difference being I have the pleasant fantasy that someday they may not do it.

you're right and yeah keep dreaming.

All musicals suck when turned into movies. Opera Phantom got Emmy Rossum right but also had retarded Gerard Butler who can barely sing and it lacked the emotion of the musicals. Jersey Boys had Clint Eastwood's weird silver-filtered direction and '90% of it took place in Christopher Walken's den; worst off all Clint "I'm a composer too!' Eastwood absolutely ruined the reveal of 'You're Too Good to Be True' which was fucking awesome in the musical and added a bunch of hepcat swinging trombone. Seriously fuck Clint's old ass for that.

Tl;Dr: - Hollywood sucks at everything and will always suck at everything. If you love it, they will destroy it.

Guys And Dolls and Rocky Horror worked

Cats bugged the fuck out of me. tbh I mostly dislike Cats, but I ran in enough drama club type circles to know what a fucking shitshow the singing in the movie was.

Have you seen any of the publicity pics lately? Grande is looking even rougher.

The Book >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Everything else based on the book. They should have made it like Caroline or Nightmare Before Christmas.
the differences to the book and musical wicked are like the differences in the book and van halen album 1984. Outside of the name its as different as you could possibly make them.

What about The Producers ruining itself by casting Uma Thurman, itself an accomplishment because is a movie adaptation of a musical that itself was an adaptation of a movie and kept most of the same cast.

The Phantom of the Opera movie musical has a Spanish dub that I adore - I don't even understand Spanish all that well but prefer it to having to listen to Gerard Butler. They just used the cast from a recent Stage production in Spain and the lip-syncing was at least good enough to not be distracting.

Nothing is worse than the Les Mis movie adaption though where they didn't even record the audio separately. Unfortunately, that one doesn't have any foreign dubs, not even French!
