Why was obesity so uncommon before the 1980's?

Easy: President Dwight D. Eisenhower had a heart attack, and the sugar industry took that as an opportunity to push a new food pyramid that said fatty food like meat should be eaten less and grains and sugars should be eaten more. We haven't recovered since.
It's most likely that his poor heart health was caused by smoking.

Well, for our first clue, how big is the "food" industry anyway?

Hmm, yeah, looks about right. A testament to American exceptionalism, for the most part. But there's a real market restriction here - more than just competing for consumer dollars, these companies compete for consumer calories, as you can only eat so much in a day. Don't fill up on Doritos, you'll spoil your appetite for dinner. So what's to be done about it? First, recognize that the problem isn't calories, it's satiation, and all you need to do is make people keep eating your goyslop beyond when they normally would.

Why do you think "you can't eat just one potato chip"? As mentioned upthread, there are scientists devoted entirely to tricking people into eating infinite Doritos. Turns out you can include sugars, fats, and salts in food in a way that you don't really actively taste, but your gut certainly notices, and when that happens it subconsciously signals your brain to keep eating that thing because it's full of important nutrients. Because your gut and brain are retarded, and scientists know how to manipulate them. Doritos are just one thing, too, don't even get started on pure liquid calories like soda, """coffee""", beer, you name it, it's all sugars and sometimes fats and people don't even notice.

A healthy 5'10" male, 160lbs, doing modest weekly exercise is at equilibrium eating ~2200 calories a day. That same male increasing his daily intake to ~2500 calories will eventually reach equilibrium at 210lbs, just into "obese" territory. That's a difference of 2 cans of soda, or ~24 Doritos chips.

Healthy to obese in 2 cans of soda a day. Now look at how many fat faggots have a 2-liter with lunch.

NYC random working class crowd 1980s. Typical?

That looks to be very early 80's, maybe even as early as 80-81, so much more representative of the leftover 70's influence. It would be better to find the same pic, from about 5-6 years later.

As far as why people in 1st world countries are turning into blobs of shit is multifactorial.

Less physical labor/blue collar jobs, more desk/sit-on-your-ass jobs.

Kids went from playing outside to playing Nintendo, then early Internets/Playstation, then mobile phone/tablets, and each time a transition has happened it has just gotten worse.

Food is much more shit than it used to be, ultraprocessed, full of hormone disruptive chemicals, stuffed with simple carbs, and up until recently, trans-fats, which were supposed to be better than saturated fats, like lard, but, oops, it turns out the shit is actually worse for you. High fructose corn syrup was more of a crime than the shoah. You can hardly tell what anything is made of by just looking at it any longer.

Microwaves were a major contributor to this phenomenon. People just wanted to heat shit up and eat it, not giving much of a shit of what was in it.

Another major contributor was that the 80's is when women really entered the workforce in force, and created the very first generation of latch-key kids. This lead to people eating more, shittier foods since no one wanted to cook. Also, with no parents at home to watch the kids until after work kids watched TV, played video games, and fucked around instead of being nagged by their mother to get the fuck out of the house and play.

You put that all together and you get people who are sacks of shit. These people, rather than learn to cook, eat real food, and move their ass, want to just buy crap from Big Pharma to trick their bodies into losing weight. 1st world solutions for 1st world problems.

Simple, OP. Changes in lifestyle choices.

When was the last time anyone you know, from friends to family to coworkers or literally anyone you know IRL, walked for more than a mile without a dog?

Maybe just one person 15 years ago in an emergency?

I myself have only one person I know who walks as a hobby. He puts weights in a rucksack and walks long distances for his fitness, but this is a very unique and eccentric person who does things most people would never think to do.

As far as anyone saying, "I walked a mile or more to pick up something from the grocery store," it's just not something we hear. That's the difference.
I'm thankful to be in a place where I can walk to work in decent weather, about a mile there and back. The sad part is, many of the people in my area have the same opportunity but don't take it. Haven't a clue why.

I used to do that at the first place I worked, it was really pretty nice. Also made me less likely to be late since I wasn't trying to push the envelope driving in.

Eh personally I think it is these things:

1) Children are to be kept indoors and addicted to apps.
2) Physical labor is looked down upon, even if it isn't your actual career.
3) All food in the Western world has been engineered to be hyperpalatable to the point of being literally like drugs.
4) Mental illness is a diagnosis given to literally anyone and you are lauded for having it.

The movie Fat Head explores this topic, though you might not like it if you don't like watching a boomer libertarian make fun of the government. I think the arguments presented make sense though.
During the 70s, the government started promoting low fat diets to prevent heart disease. It was based on flimsy science. You're actually supposed to eat animal fats. Instead, they started pushing carbs, which just made everyone fat. In addition, processed foods are terrible for you, and they're everywhere now.

Also, it's yet another case where the "experts" ruin society and everyone just believes them for some reason.

Pretty sure it has at least something to do with the contemporaneous rise of helicopter moms.

  • Everything is processed slop now. Seed oils replace butter and tallow, corn syrup replaced actual sugar.
  • Fast food and gas station junk was a luxury/snack and now it's a staple diet for people.
  • Outdoor activities like football, fishing, hunting, and similar got replace by the TV and videogame equivalent.
  • Smoking during breaks got replaced by vaping on the go. There's more time to eat. 2 sugar packet coffees also got replaced by 400 calorie paint-thinner tier sodas.
  • Nobody cooks anymore and seafood's seen as a luxury in the US, so everyone is iodine deficient. There's a reason every other fatty says "muh thyroid" and iodized salt exists.
  • People are just so fucking  lazy, they'll fire up the car to go somewhere that's a 5 minute walk away. The fattest fatties will take mobility scooters because they can't be bothered to walk. They'll buy a golf cart or ATV for getting around their single digit acreage property. Riding mowers. Roombas. Remote operated everything. Fucking no-shed pets like hairless cats.

Same as everyone is saying.

-Processed foods are the norm. Now that both parents usually have jobs they usually only have a little bit of free time to feed their families.
-Video games and phones making people sit on their ass.
-24-hour day channels. Back then some channels ended programming at certain times. Less Kids channels.
-More free range parents. Parents today are discouraged to let their kids go far from home and be back by dark. So they run around less.
-Recess and gym at school. Some schools have limited time on these now.
-More jobs that have you just sit around at a computer all day.

All of these reasons are bullshit, fat fucks are simply eating way too much. You can easily sit on your ass all day not be fat if you don't eat 10 packs of chips.
It's like everything today, zero impulse control, addicts just looking for the next high without thinking.

Looking at the US its the areas with spics and niggers that are fat, while big metros with Asians and mountain states like Utah are thin.

I assure you that you will be VERY fit if you live the correct life even if you eat seed oils in your food and you buy lots of cheap processed products from cheap stores like LIDL or w/e.
I'm not saying that all the crap in these goyslops is not having negative effects. I am fairly sure it has.
I am saying that being sedentary AND eating a lot of bad food is gonna kill you for sure.
If you hit the fucking road for a run 5 days/week for an hour+, I guarantee you that you will reach below 14% body fat in just a year if you're not a disgusting landwhale that eats like Chantelle. I guarantee you that your cardiovascular system will improve its health by a very large margin, to the point where what made you huff&puff will be a low heart rate, super chill recovery activity that your body can tolerate for hours on end. Your heart efficiency will improve dramatically, and where it once needed 70bpm to oxygenize your tissues, it will now be able to do that at a chill 40 bpm (rough figures ofc). Your mood will be dramatically improved as the parasympathetic system modulates it, you will be mellow and focused. Your sleep will be deep and your body will get used to repair itself and improve each night.
Yes, even with goyslop food.

The biggest reason is pop / soda and other sugary drinks. Pepsi and other pops were heavily advertised in the 80s and 90s. Kool Aid and others were also. But pop is the primary reason. Mexico is the fattest, per-capita, and they have religious holidays where they basically worship Coke like God.

People were more obsessed with cardio and physically demanding sports during the 80s, 90s, and 00s, if my memory serves me right.

If only we kept it up.
