This could be because your integrated GPU is slower than the CPU itself, or due to software optimization issues. No way to know without providing more detail.

and why is it enabled by default?
Because it usually improves performance.

It's most likely a mind boggling trick devised by Google to accelerate your loss of patience for whenever your Chromium/Electron app heavily stutter.

Pro tip: disable hardware acceleration on the Steam client. It's nothing but a pain in the ass.

it sounds like you have hardware deceleration enabled in your system settings. you can easily fix this by reformatting and installing Linux :neckbeard:

your probably misdiagnosing the issue, try closing all your porn and discord tabs out and then see if the slow down still occurs.

Refresh your gpu drivers. Try on fresh browser install.
Some browser-os-gpu profiles are just incompatible sadly. On old PC, HA in browser crashed the system.

In my recent experience hardware acceleration causes a bunch of artifacting in modern programs. I usually just turn it off now because otherwise I get all sorts of bizarre graphical issues like stretching ui elements and smearing frames when I move my mouse. My Friend has the same issues on his 3060.
