back in the dawn of time in the late 90s when I found out about ebooks I found I overcame my initial issues when I made sure to size it portrait style instead of giant wide sentences
It's because of the light levels given off by each type of screen. E-readers and kindles usually have less intense back-lights and limit blue light which I think is the one that fucks your eyes up if you stare for too long. Phones tend to be the worst because you're not supposed to be looking at it for too long and it needs to be readable in bright conditions also, so generally a much brighter screen.

Back when I was in college and warez were not so plentiful, there was a hell of a lot of Xeroxing. The key was to get in a group and make multiple copies at a time.
Pirate the book and print it. Go to your local bookshop and ask them to print your .pdf book if they have printers.
This is what I do every time I need a book. Book shops near universities are often specialized in printing and packaging the copies into a book.
They work on an entirely different principle.
Tl;dr is e-reader screens are filled with tiny black and white pellets that rise to the surface of the screen depending on the electric charge.
I used to put books on a flash cartridge so I could read them on my DS. It wasn't bad - low resolution, sure, but readable.
Tried on a smartphone at some point but the screen was too bright, hurt my eyes.
