I got to the same place starting from radiation horror and space program deaths, with a sprinkling of barotrauma and cave diving. And the Death Valley Germans. I'm all about the "Walking Ghost Phase" and Rumsfeld would call the "Unknown Unknown."

Everest is a lot like having a version of outer space that you can just hike yourself into, taking selfies all the way.

Oh, yeah, the guys whose spaceship caught fire was horrifying, and cave diving/barotrauma-tube is very closely connected to mountain horror-tube. Nowadays I mostly limit myself to Mentour Pilot, the turboautist airplane crash analyst, for the sake of sanity and because I have a busy schedule of laughing at Lou and Graeme Kelly. But after that first cwm man...

People tell you that cwming is dangerous, that it'll ruin your algorithm; but you're young, you think you're invincible, you tell yourself you can handle it.


It's not until that immense white cwm is right there, in your face, that you realize you made a horrible mistake.
