I'll give you an honest explanation. A people's culture can be molded by their geography. In the case of islands, their remoteness makes them have special characteristics. The isolation tends to bring a unique, rich culture, but it also isolates them culturally from the rest of the world. So, when you talk, unfortunately, from someone from the UK or Japan (which I have) you notice that they psychologically think in isolation and the continental world seems like it would not apply to them. They are on their little island of the mind. Weirdly, in the UK and Japan, you both have incredibly repressive sexual culture paired with an equally incredibly amount of perverse and deviant behavior. Maybe that's an island thing, maybe not. NZ is just a commonwealth shithole, so I don't separate them from the UK.
